Painfully difficult to read

This book is difficult to finish. Front cover to back the struggle of good vs evil is evident, drawn out and a downright struggle to read. I found myself hating to turn the page and move forward, because it seemed like there was no forward movement at all. Page after page of frustration to be culminated by a swift and totally unsatisfying ending. In no way was the finish worth the agony of reading this book and twisting and turning with the lead character page after page. Total frustration in print form. I was not pleased at all and kept wanting to skip to the end of this book to read the finale or just put it down, never to finish it at all.

All About Eve -- the Sequel??

Natty and Sean Wainwright are living a perfect life: college sweethearts, still in love, running a perfect hotel with perfect daughters. Sure, Sean's mother is a bitch, but she's away on a vacation. And sure, they're working their butts off, but their hotel is top rated with all the amenities. One daughter is off on a school trip in France; the other is safely tucked away at home. And Natty and Sean's dear friend Eve is coming to visit.
Then the perfect evening/friendship/life goes south. The daughter in France is gravely ill. Eve graciously offers to stay at the hotel and help Sean out. Natty rushes to her daughter's side.
And Eve rushes to Sean's side, fulfilling all his fantasies, being the perfect substitute wife and mother. And Sean falls for it, hook, line and sinker.
With all that, the book isn't really a mystery at all. It's a sordid scene of domestic bliss gone bad. But then there are secrets. Lots and lots of creepy secrets dating back to when the three first knew each other. These are the secrets that defined their friendship if, in fact, it could be called a friendship.
I found that Paula Daly has an excellent narrative voice. She tells a story fluidly, with rhythm. Her dialog sounds real. Her descriptions and insights are both humorous and evocative. She adds detail that make the story move --- like the tourists who used the in-room kettle to heat curry, or the little parking lot fracas.
Daly also draws some interesting characters -- quirky, insightful in their ways, unique, and interesting.
And she comes up with some creepily twisted secrets and backstory that make you question what lies beneath the surface of any "perfect" relationship. There are old liaisons and lies and deceptions and actions that are best kept secret.
What she doesn't do is tell a believable story. How could Eve have planned this little adventure? How could Sean fall so quickly and completely? How could everyone be so deluded? How could none of these secrets emerged earlier? Why would anyone keep a friend like Eve close?
It's an easy read. It's a fast read. It's an enjoyable read. But in the end it fails to satisfy.

Rancid Melodrama

This was one of those novels where none of the main characters is likeable. The psychotic serial-mistress villain (PSMV) is barely one-dimensional. Her PoV sections, written in third person by the omniscient narrator, reveal her as a bottom-feeding narcissistic predator with no redeeming characteristics. Husband Sean is a doormat of major proportions, easy prey for the PSMV since wifey has been neglecting certain aspects of their marriage. He doesn’t have his own sections but is slotted in wherever the author requires his confused presence.
Wifey, who narrates her own sections, is an obsessive-compulsive workaholic with an uncontrolled homicidal temper and a bottomless ability to justify her every action and thought. Not to mention too busy to work bedroom time for Sean into her crowded days, and too oblivious to recognize this is as a potential marital hazard. She also has a dark secret from her past that she is frantic to keep hidden from daughters Alice and Felicity, who exist mainly to provide a reason for the dark secret to be an important plot point.
The plot? Oh, you can guess that.
Borrow the book from the public library if you must, but don’t waste money on it.
