classic proof of perhaps the most important theorem in higher-dimensional (n>4) topology

Milnor's "Lectures on the h-cobordism theorem" consists of a proof and applications of the h-cobordism theorem, an important technical result that, among other things, leads immediately to a proof of the Poincare conjecture for smooth manifolds of dimension >= 5. The theorem was originally proved by Smale in 1962 (part of the basis for his Fields Medal) using handlebody techniques, but in this book Milnor presents a (partially) different proof using Morse theoretic lemmas due to Morse and Barden. Along the way, a number of theorems and techniques in differential topology are used or derived (including the Whitney trick, finger moves, bicollarings, surgery, extensions of embeddings and isotopies, smooth structures on unions, Poincare duality), which makes this valuable as much for the methods as for the final result. Definitely it is one of the best books for learning how to actually prove things in topology, mixing in Morse theory, Riemannian geometry, and algebraic topology, too.

The h-cobordism theorem states that an n-dim simply connected cobordism W between 2 simply connected (n-1)-dim manifolds V,V' that are each homotopy equivalent to W (which is the definition of an h-cobordism) is isomorphic to a product, with the isomorphism depending on the category of manifolds with which one is working. In particular, if such a W exists, then V and V' must be diffeomorphic. This book, as well as Smale's original proof, only deals with the smooth case, where the theorem is shown to be true for all n except possibly 4 or 5 (with the n=4 case being equivalent to the original Poincare conjecture that has now been proved using different techniques). PL and topological versions of the theorem also has been proved, as well as one with somewhat relaxed requirements (the s-cobordism theorem), but none of these extensions are explored in the book, although there is some mention of them. The proof basically proceeds by finding a Morse function on the cobordism for which it can be decomposed into a union of "elementary cobordisms," each with a single critical value and index. The Morse function is then perturbed in a series of steps so that the critical points can be cancelled, eventually leaving a cobordism with no critical points, which is diffeomorphic to a product. In the handlebody version of the proof (not presented here, but see Kosinski's Differential Manifolds), this decomposition is equivalent to a handlebody decomposition, which is then manipulated by sliding and cancelling handles and until they are all removed. The dimensional restriction (n>=6) primarily comes from the application of the Whitney trick - in lower dimensions there is not enough room to remove algebraically cancelling intersections between embedded spheres - and it is this limitation that accounts for the difficulties in 4-dimensional smooth topology.

The book is accessible to graduate students who have taken 1st-year courses in differential and algebraic topology. He cites such texts as Munkres' Elementary Differential Topology, his own lectures notes (which appear in Collected Papers of John Milnor. Volume III: Differential Topology), and de Rham's Varietes differentiables for the differential topology, but the reader may prefer more modern treatments, such as Guillemin & Pollack's Differential Topology or Hirsch's Differential Topology. For the algebraic topology he often mentions results (such as Alexander duality) without citing any reference, so you'll need a good background in homology theory (I'd recommend Dold's Lectures on Algebraic Topology or Greenberg & Harris's Algebraic Topology: A First Course). One definite prerequisite is the first part of Milnor's own Morse Theory, which provides the foundation for the proof. In fact, this book is good companion to "Morse Theory," in the sense that many important and basic results in the subject that were surprisingly left out of "Morse Theory" are proved here.

Overall the book is relatively clean, with only some typos, chiefly in the form of missing or mistaken subscripts and indices. This only really becomes a problem at the end of Chapter 5, where a key subscript 1 is omitted in the last equation of page 65 (should be E_{1} instead of E) and then repeatedly for the constant k on the next page (i.e., k_{1} instead of K). On pg. 101 he states that he has proved the case index = 1 when he means index = 0 (but this should be obvious), and in a number of places a theorem is cited by the wrong number, in particular, 3.14 and 3.4 are switched a lot.

Despite its age this remains one of the most significant books in the theory of manifolds. The aforementioned book by Kosinski, which you should certainly read as well, is the only other one that I can think of that contains the complete proof of the h-cobordism theorem, but the method is different. More recently, Matsumoto's An Introduction to Morse Theory copies much of the material from this book, including identical proofs and diagrams for Theorem's 4.1 and 5.6, and mixes handlebody arguments with the analytic ones, but stops well short of even stating the h-cobordism theorem. The final few pages contain applications of the theorem to prove various results about smooth manifolds that are contractible or homotopy spheres; cf. Kosinski for more extensive results of this type.

First of all, I'd like to apologize to the esteemed Ms.Jordan for voicing out my disappointment and for giving this less than 5 star. I fear I sound like an ingrate for she generously gifted this to me. I always believe in honesty is the best policy, and I'm sure Ms.Jordan would agree with me. I believe that she gifts many reviewers many of her books solely for the purpose of posting an honest and fair review.

Having said all that, If you like a lot of hot sex scenes and not much of a real story, this one will do that for you. I was impressed with the first book, it had potential and a great promise of becoming one of the best sellers that I rated it 5 star. It was full of intrigue, drama, a little angst and of course, hot sex...and it was exactly just that, pure sex and not much else. The majority of this short tale was all about their wild kinky sex. While at Gio's little yacht over the whole weekend, they had a marathon of sex, Gio trying to establish dominance over Taryn as his sub, pages and pages of them that I ended up skimming through it all. It just got old and, somehow the magic from the first book was lost.

Too short for my taste

This was a quick ride...I am very happy that i bought complete series...because it is too short for my taste. The story is interesting and sex scenes are hot, that is why i gave 3 stars. The main character are Twins sisters, which switches their positions. One is engaged to someone, but his brother is eager to split them apart. Here come here twin sister, and she falls for his brother....It is really short story, and i really did not get to know each of characters, there was a lot of sex and that is it.
I read all series as one in 2 hours. And all i rememberr was a lot of sex...I think i would not bought book 2 if i read them separately.

I love this book it is a great read and is it a lovely story i coulden't put it down i finish the book withing 3 hour. lucia Jordan have done a great job with every singler one of her book i have read so far like 6 of her book and i just buy lick the complete serie and am planning in keep buying more, i like the fact than the book are not so long an it go straight to the poin with out walking the reader to an unecesary information love short story and she is so far one of the best writting short story..

Pecks Bad Boy and His Pa

My family grew up with this book with my father reading summer nights at our cabin with lantern light. I can't read the story to my grandkids without falling apart with laughter. I sent it to a cousin who was recently reminiscing about our childhood. He plans to keep it on his shelf next to his holy bible.

My grandfather born in the late 1800's always talked about his favorite book "Peck's Bad Boy". I was born in the 1940's and was not familiar with this book, so when I saw it was available on my kindle I wanted to read it. It was a fun book, and it helped me get a better glimpse into my grandfather's childhood. He was not Peck's bad boy but perhaps he liked a lot to the tricks that Peck's boy played and had wished he could have done them. Thanks for a good read, plus being able to go back in time and be with my grandfather as he told me all about Peck's bad boy.

Just plain fun

Every boy who ever lived has enjoyed playing tricks on the grumpy people in their neighborhood who always called the police or kept their baseball.
Theses stories really test the imagination but telling them through the grocer was genius.
Many years later tony soprano highlighted a lot of his problems through his psychiatrist.
George Peck, the author, later became the governor of Wisconsin.

About the Author
Douglas Penick was a research associate at the Museum of Modern Art, NY, and studied and practiced with Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche and other Tibetan teachers for more than 40 years. He wrote the Canadian NFB’s series on the Tibetan Book of the Dead (Leonard Cohen, narrator) and libretti for two operas: King Gesar (Sony CD w/ Ma, Serkin, Ax, etc.) and Ashoka’s Dream (Santa Fe Opera) with Peter Lieberson. He received grants from the Witter Bynner Foundation for Poetry and from the Graham Foundation, . In addition to three book-length episodes from the Gesar Epic, many of his short pieces have been published in the US, Canada, Malaysia, the UK, France, the Czech Republic, Germany and Australia. His novel about the 3rd Ming Emperor, A JOURNEY OF THE NORTH STAR was brought out by Publerati in 2012. DREAMERS AND THEIR SHADOWS, his new novel about spiritual seekers, teachers and the labyrinth of their longings has just become available. Gesar Kicks Demon A**

I am not a student of Eastern philosophy, although I've always thought that I had some appreciation for Buddhist ideas. Well, Gesar is not your sanitary, American high school Buddhism. Gesar is a warrior and superman, and through meditation and divine interaction, he goes out and - excuse the expression - Kicks Some Demon A**. The demon kingdoms surround Gesar's country of Ling, and Gesar must be victorious over them, so the populous will turn towards the tenets of Buddhism and his country have security.
Gesar is an ancient tale from the Himalayan region, and its hero based on a real king. The author has done his best to abridge the major story into a form that is approachable to those of us without extensive background to Tibetan or Mongolian Buddhism, or knowledge of the extensive pantheon of Buddhist deities. However, I fear he has shortened the tale too much; some of his actions seemed like they needed more context. Doing a book search through a university library led me to another translation of the epic of Gesar - *The Superhuman life of Gesar of Ling* by Alexandra David-Neel & the lama Yongden. This version is nearly 400 pages long, compared to 150 pages. Obviously Douglas J. Penick took some liberties with the translation.
This is an exciting tale, filled with magic, demons, and adventure. It is a good, "off-the-beaten-path" story that will give you another perspective on Buddhism and an insight into the cultures of the Himalayan region.

Classic Inspiration

The story of Gesar, the Warrior King offers us a modern hero. The ancient wisdom-culture of Tibet in union with buddhism is the context of this fifteenth century poetic narrative. And while it is tempting to lose oneself in the iron-age magic, the source of Gesar's power is not sorcery, but the depth of his heart.

The impact of Penick's gorgeous line and verse is not just a satisfying romp back to the shamanistic wisdom of the ancient past, though you could read it that way. The Warrior Song of King Gesar is an energizing call to rise from current depression and hopelessness, to engage the obstacles we face. Like King Gesar, we must get intimate and give birth to genuine culture with depth for dreaming, passion for creating, faith to start, and compassion to persevere.

Those of us living in the "anti culture," --the Big-Box materialism that has lead us to global warming and the Shopping Channel ( to mention a few house hold examples of material and spiritual degredation) will find much in this rendition of a fifteenth century epic that is spooky in its relevance: "Our earth is wounded/Her rivers are like running sores...)" To respond takes not just strategy and grim determination, but fundamentally, heart.

The Warrior Song of King Gesar is bone fide, life sustaining human culture: It's called a SONG, not SELF HELP. "Gesar comes like an iron wheel rolling across the sky..." Maybe it is time to start singing.

An introduction to the Buddhist version of the Gesar epic.

I found this to be a good translation of a specific abbreviated version of the longest epic poem in the world. It is a heavily Buddhist version, casting King Gesar as an emanation of Chenrezig (Avalokitesvara), which is one of several slants on the tale. The interpolated Dharma discourses tend to break up the pure narrative flow, but that just the way it is. I might recommend it as a brief introduction to the story, but for my detailed scholarly research I will have to dig further.
