About the Author
Author D. M. Ulmer enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1947. In two-years, he was promoted to third class electronic technician onboard the submarine USS Clamagore. Six months later, he was advised he’d be transferred to the Naval Academy Prep School. When Ulmer asked his captain “why me?” the skipper replied facetiously, “I don’t think you’re smart enough to make second class and I need the bunk space!” Ulmer returned to Clamagore in 1967 as Commanding Officer. He then became one of a few, if not the only CO, to have served in an enlisted status and as commanding officer in the same warship. Captain Ulmer’s 32 year Navy Career included: 1949 German submarine U-2513; Given to the US Navy in 1945 as partial reparation for WWII. Mar. – Sept. 1949 USS Clamagore (SS 343). 1954 US Naval Academy graduate. July 1954 – 55 USS Fremont (APA 44). July – 55 US Navy Officers’ Submarine School. Jan. 1956 – June 58 USS Halfbeak (SS 352). What was more important the submarine recovery and danger involved or a relationship between a widower and school teacher? Your cover suggest one not the other. More torpedoes and less love affairs.

Astounding story

Ulmer, again, leads us to an undersea adventure with his trademark appealing characters; some transitional from previous novels...much to our delight! I did like those folks!
Details of submarine life is secondary to the sinister development of conspiracy and suspense.
As a 'landlubber'and a female to boot, I found the narrative to move along with a 'don't put it down' result.
Ulmer's previous novels gave us insight into the lives of submarine commanders and crew with their sometimes complicated relationships ashore, thus strengthening the appeal to a woman's readership.
Building on that, in this novel, he develops characters within varying settings leading to the conclusion colored by international intrigue.
The main conflict captivates with an astounding climax. A gripping story. Ulmer knows his subject well. His first hand knowledge conveys an authenticity to the plot, completing a tale of intensity.
In my view, this is the best of his five exceptional submarine Cold War based novels...although I am glad I didn't miss any of them.

Great writing! Seriously pissed me off with the ending.

If all I were reviewing were the quality of the writing, I'd give this 4 stars. It's a good story, with interesting characters, solidly told. But I actually want to give it 2 stars because the ending pissed me off so much. It's a total cliffhanger, with no hint of plot resolution in sight. This is not a complete story in any sense. I get it - this is a teaser for a larger story arc. That's awesome, but that is not what it's listed as, and I invested money in buying this and time in reading this. That pisses me off. I get that this is a marketing tactic these days but I dislike feeling tricked. I paid for a story and only got half what I expected.

I won't be reading more. It was good, but not good enough or engaging enough to overcome this initial anger. Or spend more money on what probably isn't a whole story in part 2, either.

Not cool. Not cool at all.

Good average fantasy fare

The first book in the saga and it is decently written/edited (although short at 4000 loc ... sequel is same length .... twist on classic story by having the "good" be evil and vice versa ... ie elves etc killed off by humans ... hero is a necromancer and his companions include zombies/vampire/ghouls etc.... the human empire is evil ... other than setting its pretty standard hero saved from destroyed village, trained,goes to war and kicks ass with few unique twists thrown in.... still a good read though and worth it if you feel the length (about 160 real pages if I am remembering the conversion right for the higher price)

One thing about a good story, if its done well, it is interesting as long as the characters are believable.

This was one of those reads that once you got past the standard "assumptions" of who is a bad guy, this book did a good job of introducing good characters and developing them personally and into a story.

It was a nice change and funny in many of the inter-relationships between Garrett and Warren as they joked about things like meals. The banter was well done, not gory or gross, and help develop your knowledge of each character's personalities.

Good start to a series. Hope the next book continues the journey.

He was a Research Fellow at Naval Air Development Center, Rome Air Development Center and Naval Research Laboratory and was an Invited Visiting Professor at Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea. He has received the Eta Kappa Nu Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher Award (1999), the IEEE Third Millennium Medal (2000), and the College Educator of the Year Award from the Technology Alliance of Central New York (2002).

Arlon T. Adams (Ph.D., University of Michigan) was a professor emeritus in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Syracuse University, where he taught and conducted research in electromagnetics for many years, focusing on antennas and microwaves. He served as electronics officer in the U. S. Navy and worked as an engineer for the Sperry Gyroscope Company. He was a Life Fellow of the IEEE from which institution he received eight prize paper and achievement awards. He was a Fulbright Scientist in Yugoslavia, a visiting scholar at Berkeley, and was general chairman of the 1988 IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society /URSI International Symposium at Syracuse, New York."

I am sincere in saying that I very much enjoyed reading this textbook from cover to cover. I believe that this textbook is best used as an undergraduate text and/or perhaps a one semester course taught at the freshman graduate level in an electrical engineering department. Dr. Lee and Dr. Adams have done a wonderful job of explaining the intimate tie between electric and magnetic fields in an extremely digestible manner.

I believe that this textbook is also the most well suited textbook on the "fundamentals of electromagnetism" that I have found (comparing with Wangsness, Griffiths, Ulbay which I have also read cover to cover) which could be readily used as a self-study text. There are a plethora of examples which aid in solving the problems at the end of each chapter.

Another aspect of this text which I liked very much was that it follows an inductive approach rather than a deductive (historical) approach, and YET the text is filled with very interesting historical details and short biographies of scientists who had a significant contribution to the field of electromagnetism.

There are very few technical errors in this text.

One error which is worth noting, because it appears in so many electromagnetism textbooks is that the potential gauge transformation should be credited to "Ludvig Lorenz" NOT "Hendrik Lorentz"!! Though the Lorenz gauge is in fact Lorentz invariant, it should be recognized that these are two entirely different concepts from two entirely different people!

This book has succeeded to provide the necessary foundation for electrical engineers to understand electromagnetics. The early chapters on electrostatics and magnetostatics are unique. The fundamental laws of nature governing electric and magnetic fields are explained in a very easy to digest way.
The part I like the most is how the concepts of polarization and magnetization of dielectric and magnetic materials are introduced. Those concepts are put in a way which paves the road for more advanced courses in the field without any self contradiction that might arise. This is something that is far from being easy but the authors in this book has really succeeded in doing so.
The formatting of the book is very comforting for the eye and the figures are so clear despite being monochromatic. This is a very important feature that I like to have in a text book as compared to a reference.
The summaries provided in the tables make the necessary information very handy.
The problems provided at the end of each chapter are carefully selected with a gradual level of difficulty. This is one of the best features of this book.

This amazing book

It is enough to share this unsigned sonnet that I found written by hand inside the copy of this fine novel that I signed out of the Toronto Public Library:

Dear friend, don't be intimidated
By this, a novel penned in verse:
Perhaps you have anticipated
That it will be obscure or worse --
Solemn, pretentious, and "poetic".
Relax! You'll need no anaesthetic.
Our author tells his tale with style
And wit and charm. Before long, I'll
Bet, you'll find yourself engrossed in
Each stanza of this narrative
Of love and lust, of take and give,
Of modern times. Let's drink a toast in
Honour of the nerve it took
To publish this amazing book.

A Tribute to The Golden Gate

Short and humble poem does attest
To my having heaved a sad sigh
On the last page - No more Golden Gate!
Oh What a genius, that Vikram Seth!
He wrote of friendship, love, and life,
Betrayals, love affairs, and strife.
Sex, politics, and other issues-
Yet all the while maintaining rhyme.
So read this book, it's worth the time.
It's sad - you might just need some tissues.

Anne Tyler walzing with Pushkin... a surprise, a delight

This book is one of a nearly extinct breed: a novel in verse. In that form lie its unique pleasures as well as its uncertain reception at some hands.
The poet James Merrill, in his epic trilogy "The Changing Light at Sandover" has claimed that "forms what affirms". Does this mean that the satisfaction of the novel can only come if the line-breaks are reliably marginal? Linguists Whorf and Sapir have suggested that language constrains our thought - not so much in the realm of vocabulary as, again, in that of form. The radically different forms of, for instance, Hopi or Inuit constrain "what is relatively easy to say" and hence, what is said. Perhaps so. You'd expect that rhyming sonnets would constrain the voice of a novelist, but Vikram Seth has certainly shown here that is not necessarily the case. Chalk it up to a mastery of both form and story, though, not to versification. His technical skills extend to both realms.
Moving, then, beyond form, we wonder about content of such a novel. Will the book wander (or waltz) into the deeply allegorical, the disconnected, the imagistic? After all, aren't those the consequences of poetic license? Have you read your Ashbery? Oddly, this poem is quite prosaic in that regard, it tells a tight, comprehensible story in a manner that is fluid but not embroidered. (By way of contrast, consider that you can easily find yourself spinning away in a vortex of magical metaphor in the latest Rushdie.) Novels, it would seem, are pretty much what we make of them. As one who has never really appreciated the modernist redesign of the novel, I found "The Golden Gate" to be a much more satisfying story - notwithstanding its several-hundred sonnets.
The book is a well-textured story about a number of folks living their lives and relationships - apparently in the 80's. (Some reviewers have made much of the story's use of timestamped phraseology such as the use of "yuppie" and the like. Perhaps. But I'd imagine that the term "Okie" was equally a well-understood, sometimes overloaded, term of the 30's which we, nevertheless, can comfortably accept from Steinbeck.) The lives, loves and trials of these folks are presented with the careful painting and pacing of Anne Tyler and J. R. Lennon.
Seth's verse in this book has been called "masterful". It is, indeed. Consider that the odd rhyme is hardly ever at hand for most of us, much less available when called upon, as he was, thousands of times. But Seth is more than a rhymer - something I noticed by contrast. I'm pretty sure the sonnet scheme he uses is the so-called "Pushkin rhyme." I only know this since I just struggled through a marginal translation of "Eugene Onegin" and noticed the similarity. But the sing-songy'ness of the Pushkin was gladly lacking in the Seth. He uses true poetic craft, line breaks and punctuation and word choice, to allow the reader to flow between a fluid, songlike verse and a more prosaic tale-telling. In other words, he uses the strengths of both forms when they serve, best, the needs of the work and the reader.
So. Don't be afraid of the form. But also don't expect it to seem natural unless you have seen it before. I came to this book via a recommendation of Tom Disch in his essays in "The Castle of Indolence" (a 5-star plug there), and from a background in having sought out and read quite a number of long poems, epic poems and verse novels.
If you taste this book more out of curiosity than experience, good for you! But grant yourself the time to bounce through the first dozen sonnets in the singy-songy phrasing that so many of us learned to be necessarily poetic many years ago. Then, as the story captures you, you will notice that the verse, with the help of Seth's subtle crafting, both lifts and disappears beneath the story. I'll read it again, and again.
