Cedar Crossing, by Mark Busby

The Trans-Cedar lynching is an infamous tale buried deep in the subconscious of rural Texas history—although it made front-page headlines in the Dallas Morning News and even in national newspapers from May through November of 1899. This horrifying event is at the center of a compelling novel by author Mark Busby. He has not only researched original documents but has used family oral histories to probe the mysteries that still shroud a lynching that is as horrifying and baffling now as it must have been over a hundred years ago. The "War of Northern Aggression" was still fresh in the memory of those who lived through it; hog-stealing, moonshine, secret meetings, and the lore of the Texas Rangers were part of the fabric of country life, and there were many who refused to believe the war was really over. Against this backdrop, a running feud between the Humphries and the Wilkinsons exploded into a triple murder.

When young Jefferson Bowie Adams II is given an assignment for a college course in 1964, President Kennedy has just been assassinated, the movement for civil rights is beginning to stir, and developments in Vietnam barely make the back pages of the newspaper. Setting out to record a story from his family's history, Jeff discovers—sitting in his grandfather's hideout while Pampaw smokes a forbidden cigar--a story that is as mesmerizing as it is shocking: the tale of a triple lynching in Henderson County in the late spring of 1899, an event Pampaw himself witnessed. Even as the scene of the crime is slowly being submerged by the filling of the Cedar Creek Reservoir, Jeff struggles to uncover the truths of what really happened that fateful night in 1899. Through the various recollections of his aging kin, Adams begins to uncover a web of relationships and a love story that ultimately leads him to a missing girl, a country graveyard, and a realization that he and his family are part and parcel of the stained history of the South.

Review
"Mark Busby's finesse in Cedar Crossing is like a deft shuffling and dealing of cards. One hand to a small-town youth on the brink of the turmoil of the 1960s, others to members of the boy's family who lead him into the intrigue of an 1899 scandal involving moonshine and lynching. It's a polished and fast-moving tale."
--Jan Reid, author of Comanche Sundown

"His narrative thrust turned high, Mark Busby sweeps us into Cedar Crossing, a novel that's vividly set in East Texas on the fading edge of a chaotic and racist frontier. . . . Again and again the novel's textures enliven the telling of this layered brave tale that offers pleasure from beginning to end."
--James Hoggard, author and professor of English at Midwestern State University

A significant novel
By K. J Presley
This is a “good read,” a significant novel based on real events: an 1899 lynching of 3 white men at what is now Cedar Creek Lake in Northeast Texas, and a college English assignment Mark Busby completed in the 60's. Dr. Busby’s love for his region is apparent, but he is not blind to its darker side. He handles the lynching and events leading up to it with honesty and sensitivity.
I kept contrasting this 1899 lynching to one a decade later in my own region (Oklahoma’s “Little Dixie.”) There were surface similarities: 4 white men (outlaws) died in Ada; the “lynchers” were upstanding Methodists, Baptists and Masons. But where Mark Busby’s family and their friends were deeply ashamed of the lynching in Texas, some Oklahomans still maintain their crime brought law and order to a lawless region. Until recently, there was a monument marking the spot and picture postcards depicting the event are auctioned on E-Bay
Several things contributed to my enjoyment of CEDAR CROSSING: I read it sandwiched between Caro’s latest volume on LBJ and P.J. O’Rourke’s recent book on Baby Boomers. The Caro book recounted the facts of the Civil Rights movement and O’Rourke’s book has some startling insights concerning the ignorance of “Baby Boomers” about our recent history. “Younger baby boomers,” says O’Rourke, “did not witness the Civil Rights movement.” They are taught it was monumental but that only produces a “Grant’s Tomb of the mind” O’Rourke and his baby boomers would benefit from reading CEDAR CROSSING.
Even more than “a remembrance of things past,” I enjoyed the powerful characters in the book. Mammaw and Pampaw could have been drawn from my own family. I loved Aunt Mag and Reba--and they will stay with me. They join other fictional women etched in my brain–some for no apparent reason:--Becky Thatcher, Dodo Brooke, Ma Joad, Lucie Manette. . .
If I were still teaching English, this is a book I would enjoy teaching in a unit on Southern literature or on Literature of the Southwest.

and I’ll jest let this one come out like a armadillo leavin’ home
By County Line Magazine
"Before we are ten pages into Cedar Crossing, the outlines of its central event have been revealed — the lynching of three Henderson County men in an area now covered by Cedar Creek Reservoir. Though this is a novel, it is thoroughly grounded in historical accounts of the actual events that garnered Henderson County unflattering publicity for a few months in1899. Filling in the bare outlines of the story is the aim and the method of the novel, but, as one of the tellers of the tale says, “Stories got their own way of rollin’ themselves out, and I’ll jest let this one come out like a armadillo leavin’ home.”- Review by Edward Garcia.

Managing a Consumer Lending Business, 2nd edition, by David Lawrence, Arlene Solomon

Managing a Consumer Lending Business, 2nd edition, summarizes the lore and knowledge of the business in the early 21st century. It covers many subjects a good manager should know: the importance of how to attract enough good accounts to offset the inevitable bad accounts that every lender will get, controlling line sizes, encouraging use by good customers/controlling the use by bad customers, managing profitability with predictability, if he or she is to effectively run a high-volume consumer business.

The second edition covers some of the problems the financial services industry experienced in the early 2000s and some of the resulting regulations implemented. The updated MIS demonstrates and compares this later period to earlier results for the industry.

Review
In Managing a Consumer Lending Business 2nd edition, Lawrence and Solomon have again assembled a comprehensive tool kit and management guide for running or evaluating a firm making consumer loans. Covering the range of products from credit cards to mortgages, and the range of functions from planning and acquisitions to risk management and collections, it also examines alternative management structures for the business.
The chapter structure is well organized and paced, while the writing style is clear, straightforward and with some humor. The authors make extensive use of examples, diagrams and tables to illustrate analytical techniques. Although applicable to a variety of markets and conditions, the book highlights recent regulatory developments in the U.S. and the impact of a recent recession. --Arthur H. Stampleman, formerly of Credit Policy Committee, Citibank (Retired)

When I finished each of your prior publications... I thought Arlene and David have nailed it.....they can't top this. Yet, once again you have topped it with the release of Managing a Consumer Lending Business 2nd edition.
No matter if the reader is an entry level participant in the consumer credit arena or a seasoned veteran, this book is well worth reading and contemplating. The book has an excellent mixture of sophistication and wisdom yet it is written in plain English so it translates technical material into readable language.
A valuable risk manager does take risk....measured risk .....in supporting their respective businesses. This book encourages prudent risk taking and how to get there, responsibly.
Congratulations on producing a first class consumer lending tutorial. --Barrett Burns, President and CEO, VantageScore Solutions, LLC

Good primer for analysts looking for more domain knowledge
By Jeomoan Kurian
Managing a Consumer Lending Business by David Lawrence and Arlene Solomon is a good primer I recommend for the readers of S4SAS.com and analysts working in the areas of consumer lending in general.

This book covers the fundamental principles of lending along with the practices at various product life cycles. While conducting SAS training, I observed that lot analysts do not know why managers look for some information and why they insist on certain format the information to be presented. After reading this book, the reader will have a background to understand the business requirements better and will be familiar with necessary lending related terminologies.

I found the following topics covered in the book useful for an analyst.

1. Overview to the consumer lending process and products.

2. Acquisition and direct mailing - segmentation, prescreen processes and practices.

3. The use of credit scoring, score monitoring and reporting process.

4. Portfolio Management and utilization of behavioral scores, strategy tracking.

5. Collection strategies and tactics

6. Private label credit cards and retail sales (dealer) financing.

8. Importance of Management Information systems.

Best in its Class
By RobRoy
Managing a Consumer Lending Business is an excellent primer covering both fundamental practices and principles for safe and sound lending. This book covers the basics well and should be required reading for management trainees and those new to consumer lending. This 2002-published book is superior to older, now-obsolete books on consumer lending, and is spiced with anecdotes, quotes and references to mistakes that made headlines. The chapter on recessions is germaine and usually neglected by other books. The only criticisms are minor: a few too many references to the authors' consulting practice, and it would be improved by a chapter or two on securitization and the gain-on-sale practices.

A Comprehensive Guide
By G.
This book is very well written. It is about managing a healthy consumer lending business by using systematic ways to plan, acquire, and maintain a portfolio and by emphasizing quantitative tools to measure its performance and manage risks. I like this book also because it provides careful accounts about the history of this industry.
This book is an excellent reference for serious practitioners. Portfolio managers and financial analysts can acquire important concepts for managing their businesses. You might even be able to start your own consumer lending business by following the steps introduced in the book. Meanwhile, this is an attractive book for consumers to equip with extensive knowledge to deal with credit card issuers, collection companies and to take care of their mortgages and automobile loans, etc.
