About the Author
Jason Jerald, Ph.D., is Co-Founder and Principal Consultant at NextGen Interactions. In addition to primarily focusing on NextGen Interactions and its clients, Jason is Chief Scientist at Digital ArtForms, is Adjunct Visiting Professor at the Waterford Institute of Technology, serves on multiple advisory boards of companies focusing on VR technologies, coordinates the Research Triangle Park-VR Meetup, and speaks about VR at various events throughout the world. Jason has been creating VR systems and applications for approximately 20 years. He has been involved in over 60 VR-related projects across more than 30 organizations including Valve, Oculus, Virtuix, Sixense, NASA, General Motors, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, three U.S. national laboratories, and five universities. Jason's work has been featured on ABC's Shark Tank, on the Discovery Channel, in the New York Times, and on the cover of the MIT Press Journal Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments. He has held various technical and leadership positions including building and leading a team of ~300 individuals, and has served on the ACM SIGGRAPH, IEEE Virtual Reality, and IEEE 3D User Interface Committees. Jason earned a Bachelor of Computer Science degree with an emphasis in Computer Graphics and Minors in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering from Washington State University. He earned a Master and a Doctorate degree in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a focus on perception of motion and latency in VR. The graduate work consisted of building a VR system with under 8ms of end-to-end latency; the development of a mathematical model relating latency, head motion, scene motion, and perceptual thresholds; and validation of the model through psychophysics experiments. Jason holds over 20 publications and patents directly related to VR.

The bible of VR... it has a bit of everything and goes into good to great depth. I am sure this will be a college textbook in this area if it is not already. Easy to read and is a great place to get a solid understanding of the tech, and the space. VR's implications are also included here and is a also a great jumping off place to learn more.... No an inexpensive book by any means but you do get what you pay for.

Good Overview to Kreskin

The chance to meet Kreskin recently came up and we spoke for a minute or two. I recounted my story of first seeing his TV show on visits to Toronto in the early 1970s when I was a kid. He inscribed a copy of his book to me and gave me his business card. He's a friendly man and it was a delight to meet him in person.

Kreskin's narrative takes us back to his childhood when he was inspired to a career in mentalism by the Mandrake the Magician comic books. He somehow found a hidden penny as a kid without help, and performed several times for his classmates.

Houdini, Kreskin tells us, was the greatest escape artist, but merely a second- or third-rate magician. Magic as seen on TV nowadays is mostly illegitimate, as it involves scripting, editing, trick photography, and paid or volunteer "people on the street" who have been coached by the producers how to act for best effect. This is more theater than magic, and is dishonest with the viewers.

His first late night TV appearance was on the Steve Allen Show, March 30, 1964 (billed as "George Kreskin"). As Kreskin tells it, this is the show where he stumbled during his entrance because he was blinded by the studio lights. He claims this inspired Johnny Carson to create the "Carnac the Magnificent" character (who always stumbles upon his entrance) from seeing him on the Allen show.

A severe chapter on Orson Welles recounts his blundering attempts at mentalism on Johnny Carson's show. He exposes some chicanery surrounding Jean Dixon's "predictions" as well.

There is no such thing as a hypnotic trance, he reminds us again, and Kreskin offers a reward for anyone who can contradict him. Hypnotism involves the power of suggestion, not an altered state.

Kreskin's trademark stunt is finding his own paycheck hidden by the audience. Over his career, he has failed to find it 9 times, and if he fails again, he will retire that part of his show. Considering how many times he has searched for his check, it seems remarkable he has failed (whether legitimately or didn't want to find it) only 9 times--especially when one realizes he isn't cheating.

A major point of the book is to drive home Kreskin's belief that there is a legitimate way to perform mentalism and an illegitimate method. The dishonest way involves the use of audience plants or secret electronic devices and other types of chicanery. Legitimate mentalism uses only those techniques and skills possessed by the performer himself, along with his props. Kreskin isn't talking about psychic mind reading, as if a person could really tune into the thought broadcasts of another person like turning on a radio, but rather the traditional performing skills related to stage magic. Playing "fair" with the audience using these guidelines means a lot to him and I can't see him violating this code of trust.

Kreskin has always said he uses no electronic devices or confederates in his show, and like the great pioneering mentalist Joseph Dunninger (1892-1975) before him, offers large rewards for anyone who can prove that he does. It's wonderful marketing and no one has any hope of collecting.

After explaining several mentalism stunts the reader can perform on his own, Kreskin then tells the story of meeting the respected magician Dr. Stanley Jaks (1903-1960) and unexpectedly receiving his library after his death. He is now interested in selling those books, listing the sales price at no less than $4 million, after turning down an offer of over $1 million. Kreskin issues a startling threat: if he doesn't find a buyer who will pay the price and properly care for the books, he may well burn them.

He mentions some problems at the Library of Congress, where Houdini's library and other valuable collections were mishandled. As someone who once worked there, I think there would be quite a number of reasons for that. And as someone who worked in an academic library special collections department, I think it would be imperative for a valuable collection to be placed where the staff and institution have a long-term interest in the person or subject matter, as well as the desire and ability to maintain the books and papers. How often is that the case? It makes me wonder what Kreskin's plans are for his own extensive library and manuscripts.

Kreskin has managed to keep himself in the public eye for over 40 years. In the 1960s, he marketed an ESP game that eventually morphed into an aid to accessing the subconscious called "Kreskin's Krystal & Pendulum." He hosted his own TV show in the 1970s and has made hundreds of guest appearances on popular talk shows over the years, such as Merv Griffin, Tom Snyder, Mike Douglas, and the Tonight Show. Kreskin challenged chess champions Anatoly Karpov, Victor Korchnoi, and Bobby Fischer, although they didn't respond. He makes annual predictions and claims he predicted 9/11 (the transcript from CNN, January 1, 2001, begins: "by September or October there will be two major plane crashes....") He backtracked after that, insisting he didn't really mean airplane crashes, but forgetting what he said later, it's a noteworthy prediction if you stop there. Kreskin still keeps a heavy personal appearance schedule.

From what I've seen, most professional mentalists like and respect Kreskin but there are some that don't, and they charge him with not coming entirely clean with the fact that his act is a variant of stage magic and he has no psychic or legitimate mind-reading abilities. But I keep reading statements by Kreskin, in this book and elsewhere, that he claims no special skills, and his abilities are "perceiving and influencing people's thoughts, both mentally and through suggestion." That is not uncommon for anyone inside or outside this profession.

Professional mentalists are in a position where "having it both ways" is good for business. Apparently Dunninger thought so. While professing no special skills for himself, he also wrote books like What's on Your Mind? and The Art of Thought Reading--the sole apparent point of which was to impress upon the American public that he possessed nothing less than genuine psychic thought-reading abilities.

Critics have cited the first edition of the book The Psychology of the Psychic (1980) in which Kreskin was lumped in with the likes of Uri Geller as someone claiming paranormal powers. However, in the second edition published in 2000, the authors removed the chapters on Kreskin, as they admitted he makes no claims to unusual abilities and therefore he didn't belong in their book.

Kreskin Confidential provides a good overview of the professional life of Kreskin from his beginnings up to recent days. He mentions the movie The Great Buck Howard (2008, based on his own life) a number of times. It's not anything approaching a thorough autobiography and can be read in a few sittings. For anyone wanting to know what Kreskin is all about, including his recent activities as well, this book is probably as good as any available right now.

Everyone's Favorite Mentalist

It is always good to hear from The Amazing Kreskin, everyone's favorite mentalist. This volume, Kreskin Confidential, is a compilation of his earlier writings: The Amazing World of Kreskin, Mind Power and Kreskin's Fun Way to Mind Expansion, with a few nostalgic tidbits from Kreskin's Secrets. It reads as an update of his life, his opinions and a confirmation that the world's most beloved mentalist is, in fact, the inspiration for the 2009 movie, The Great Buck Howard.

While this volume does not capture the candid insight of his first autobiography, or the intellectual maturity of Mind Power and Fun Way to Mind Expansion, it will not disappoint his fans. Our favorite mentalist discusses television history from his perspective. He speaks of a variety of personalities--people he has known and observed in the entertainment field. He discusses the new technology that is effecting magic, audiences and performers.

Now in his seventies, Kreskin's writings are somewhat nostalgic, rather than revealing. He spends significant time talking about his experiences on the Tonight Show, describing a precious memory of his youth when he and his mother appeared on Who Do You Trust with Ed McMahon and Johnny Carson.

Kreskin's fans will enjoy this book. It is a worthy read, but it leaves the reader and fan wanting more. This reader enjoyed Kreskin Confidential, but is left wondering...who are you Kreskin? We need another in depth autobiography--like The Amazing World of Kreskin--a kind, delightful portrait of a man in his thirties who was so in awe of show business, parapsychology and entertainment. Kreskin, We need you to tell us who have you become at seventy-four.

Kreskin Confidential still depicts the delightful and genuine entertainer who never disappoints a fan, yet can "name drop" better than any celebrity living. He is prone to hyperbole and we love him for it.
Kreskin, for your next book, fill it up with little whispers; tiny secrets that have little to do with hypnosis or thought reading--draw a picture of your soul and let those who admire and love you understand why you are such a special human being.

Creating the illusion of a new book

This is not a traditional autobiography, but rather a combination of name-dropping memoir and critique of other famous magicians deemed untalented or even deceitful. A couple of chapters of mentalist parlor tricks, which Kreskin admits to recycling from earlier books, are thrown in to barely stretch the book to 200 pages. Anyone looking for an in-depth discussion of what exactly he does for a living will be disappointed. In fact, the final chapter coyly sidesteps that issue entirely, presenting a top-ten list of hypotheses of how people think he performs his act.

Maybe he can foresee the need for a copy-editor for a future edition: there are frequent syntax and spelling errors. Nevertheless, the author’s essential humility, sincerity and dedication to his craft shine through the sometimes clumsy prose. The highlight for me was the chapter on the nature of hypnosis. His years of practical experience give him as much credibility in this area as any academic. He makes the interesting point that there is no such thing as a trance state, only the effects of suggestion, and that elaborate induction rituals are unnecessary. The implications for the application of the technique, not just for performers but for therapists, are intriguing.

Since he holds others to a high standard of honesty, I can’t resist pointing out one claim that undermines his credibility. It regards his accusation that some stage hypnotists render their subjects unconscious by compressing their carotid arteries. I am not an expert on magic, but as a physician I do know something about carotid blood flow. The pressure required to diminish this flow on even one side of the neck is extremely uncomfortable, and both sides would have to be compressed in order to make someone faint by this method. Essentially, this would amount to strangling someone on stage, a trick unlikely to go undetected.

The Immortals series is a joint venture for three different authors. The first, fourth and fifth books are by Jennifer Ashley (AKA Allyson James). The second book is by Robin T. Popp, and the third by Joy Nash.

If you haven't read the first book, you really should before reading this one. It's a great story (I liked it more than this one.) and it sets the stage for the series.

If you have read it, you can skip this next paragraph:
The paranormal beings in this series are witches, demons, vampires, "The Immortals", and shapeshifters. "The Immortals" are five sons of the Celtic gods and goddesses. (Adrian, Darius, Kalen, Hunter, and Tain) They were created to protect the world from death magic. (Death magical beings include demons and vampires.) After several millennia, the Immortals have been all but forgotten. In the past, witches would chant "The Calling" spell to summon the Immortals for help whenever evil threatened. Those of the 5 whom are still fighting evil today, are doing so at their own leisure. Once these brothers realized that they could live in freedom, they each went their own way. They have not seen one another for hundreds of years.
The world of magic is divided between those who live in "life magic", and those who live in "death magic". Life magic lives in the Immortals, good witches, the Celtic gods/ goddesses, and shapeshifters. Death magic lives in demons and vampires. For millennia, they have battled. Now, some vampires are joining with the beings of life- magic to prevent demons from overtaking the world.

"The Darkening":

Something was missing... I believe the best word for it is "charm".
Robin Popp's addition to the Immortals series was full of action and suspense. Unfortunately, it was not really a love story. While I enjoy steamy love scenes, far too many scenes in "The Darkening" were centered upon open sex, or the quest for sex, between various characters. It interrupted the plot for me. Still, those scenes were short enough that I didn't get bored before the plot came back into play.

One very engaging aspect of the first book, "The Calling", was the charisma of the hero's partner in battle, Ferrin. Ferrin, a cobra snake, had a sarcasm that was the comic relief that kept the story lively. He was both vulnerable and powerful. A weapon, and best friend for the hero. In "The Darkening", the hero (Darius) has a similar partner named "Fury". A very cool dragon who was powerful and loyal. Unfortunately, he didn't have the ability to mind- speak like Ferrin did, so we didn't get to enjoy him. He was just there when needed in battle.

The hero, Darius, held the emotion that saved this story for me. He wanted nothing more than to unite his family and find companionship. New York, Modern Day:
Upon reaching Earth, Darius sees a man beating a woman in a parking lot. Immediately, he rushes to her aid. When the woman realizes that he is one of the Immortals, she offers to help him get to his oldest brother Adrian in Seattle. Before he can go, Darius finds reason to believe that his missing youngest brother is in New York. He will stay and try to save Tain from the demon leader.

Lexi is a werewolf/ witch who works as a bounty hunter. While trying to apprehend a "skip", she finds herself in a tough fight. Out of nowhere, a warrior enters the battle and quickly downs the skip. She is shocked to learn that he is one of the 5 Immortals that she and several other witches attempted to bring to Earth with The Calling spell weeks earlier. Excited that the spell may have worked after all, she takes him to her apartment to contact Adrian.

Tain knows his brothers are searching for him. After 700 years of torture, his mind is bent. He is in love with the female glamour that the demon leader wears. He will kill his own brothers to help destroy the world. Now that Darius has arrived, Tain will pretend to be a victim. It is an easy way to lure Darius to his death.

Darius refuses to believe Adrian's warning about Tain. The oldest must be mistaken. Tain was the most gentle and loving of the 5 brothers. Darius is sure Tain is being held against his will. Whatever it takes, Darius will find and free Tain. When the work is done, Darius will be free to pursue his feelings for Lexi. After centuries of loneliness, he knows he has found the love he always dreamed of.

Great installment

I'm really enjoying this series. I am a huge Robin T Popp fan so I was really looking forward to this. The book was a fast read and very intense. However I did have a few problems with it. I didn't really feel the affection between the hero and herione. Plus I felt that she would have had sex with anyone and blamed her hormones due to the full moon. I can't say anymore without giving spoilers, but overall it was a good book.

Popp has penned an action packed story for the Immortal Darius and a bounty hunting werewolf in heat named Lexi as they join the battle to stop an ancient demon and a rogue Immortal from ending the human race. Darius is forced to stay in his magical home of Ravenscroft because of his goddess mother, Sekhmet, and her overprotective interference by holding his life-force captured in an orb about her neck. Darius is determined to answer the Calling and destroys the orb, which returns his life-force to him but in a more vulnerable way. A spell is cast as he vanishes from Ravenscroft that creates complications for him on Earth as he finds out the reason for the Calling, Lexi's part in it and the uncontrollable passion between him and Lexi. Lexi is trying to help Darius get to his Immortal brother Adrian, which isn't easy with her being in heat, warring vampires, a leprechaun, and her wood nymph friend all becoming intertwined in the latest scheme by the powerful demon and the rogue Immortal.
Darius and Lexi will take you through the streets of New York as they attempt to stop the death magic from overcoming the life magic. Their relationship erupts from a build up of unleashed passion and untold feelings into an emotional experience that will touch your heart. The story's trail of intrigue flows endlessly throughout the plot with plenty of action and passion. Well developed and memorable characters will pull you into this exciting story and hold you captive to the climactic end. What comes next for the Immortals is now left to Joy Nash as she continues this series with Immortals: The Awakening. Differential equations first appeared in the late seventeenth century in the work of Isaac Newton, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, and the Bernoulli brothers, Jakob and Johann. They occurred as a natural consequence of the efforts of these great scientists to apply the new ideas of the calculus to certain problems in mechanics, such as the paths of motion of celestial bodies and the brachistochrone problem, which asks along which path from point P to point Q a frictionless object would descend in the least time. For over 300 years, differential equations have served as an essential tool for describing and analyzing problems in many scientific disciplines. Their importance has motivated generations of mathematicians and other scientists to develop methods of studying properties of their solutions, ranging from the early techniques of finding exact solutions in terms of elementary functions to modern methods of analytic and numerical approximation. Moreover, they have played a central role in the development of mathematics itself since questions about differential equations have spawned new areas of mathematics and advances in analysis, topology, algebra, and geometry have often offered new perspectives for differential equations.

This book provides an introduction to many of the important topics associated with ordinary differential equations. The material in the first six chapters is accessible to readers who are familiar with the basics of calculus, while some undergraduate analysis is needed for the more theoretical subjects covered in the final two chapters. The needed concepts from linear algebra are introduced with examples, as needed. Previous experience with differential equations is helpful but not required. Consequently, this book can be used either for a second course in ordinary differential equations or as an introductory course for well-prepared students.

The first chapter contains some basic concepts and solution methods that will be used throughout the book. Since the discussion is limited to first-order equations, the ideas can be presented in a geometrically simple setting. For example, dynamics for a first-order equation can be described in a one-dimensional space. Many essential topics make an appearance here: existence, uniqueness, intervals of existence, variation of parameters, equilibria, stability, phase space, and bifurcations. Since proofs of existence-uniqueness theorems tend to be quite technical, they are reserved for the last chapter.

Systems of linear equations are the major topic of the second chapter. An unusual feature is the use of the Putzer algorithm to provide a cc9nstructive method for solving linear systems with constant coefficients. The study of stability for linear systems serves as a foundation for nonlinear systems in the next chapter. The important case of linear systems with periodic coefficients (Floquet theory) is included in this chapter.

Chapter 3, on autonomous systems, is really the heart of the subject and the foundation for studying differential equations from a dynamical viewpoint. The discussion of phase plane diagrams for two-dimensional systems contains many useful geometric ideas. Stability of equilibria is investigated by both Liapunov's direct method and the method of linearization. The most important methods for studying limit cycles, the Poincare-Bendixson theorem and the Hopf bifurcation theorem, are included here. The chapter also contains a brief look at complicated behavior in three dimensions and at the use of Mathematics for graphing solutions of differential equations. We give proofs of many of the results to illustrate why these methods work, but the more intricate verifications have been omitted in order to keep the chapter to a reasonable length and level of difficulty.

Perturbation methods, which are among the most powerful techniques for finding approximations of solutions of differential equations, are introduced in Chapter 4. The discussion includes singular perturbation problems, an important topic that is usually not covered in undergraduate texts.

The next two chapters return to linear equations and present a rich mix of classical subjects, such as self-adjointness, disconjugacy, Green's functions, Riccati equations, and the calculus of variations.

Since many applications involve the values of a solution at different input values, boundary value problems are studied in Chapter 7. The contraction mapping theorem and continuity methods are used to examine issues of existence, uniqueness, and approximation of solutions of nonlinear boundary value problems.

The final chapter contains a thorough discussion of the theoretical ideas that provide a foundation for the subject of differential equations. Here we state and prove the classical theorems that answer the following questions about solutions of initial value problems: Under what conditions does a solution exist, is it unique, what type of domain does a solution have, and what changes occur in a solution if we vary the initial condition or the value of a parameter? This chapter is at a higher level than the first six chapters of the book.

There are many examples and exercises throughout the book. A significant number of these involve differential equations that arise in applications to physics, biology, chemistry, engineering, and other areas. To avoid lengthy digressions, we have derived these equations from basic principles only in the simplest cases.

Grade 2-5–An interesting account of the Canadian fur trade in the early years of the 19th century as seen through the eyes of a M�tis boy. The youngster lives with his family just outside Fort William, which was the major trading post linking the fur trade of northern and central Canada to the North West Company's main headquarters in Montreal. Voyageurs, easily identified by the red sash they wore, were the men who worked in the fur trade, traveling along the trade routes by canoe. The boy, who longs to be a voyageur like his father, describes his family's life and the role that Fort William played in the opening of the Canadian interior. Historically accurate, this story is full of interesting details that add to its authenticity. Sharp-eyed readers may also catch the native name for Lake Superior, Gitchee Gumee. A brief history of Fort William and the North West Company is appended. The map on the inside cover provides geographic context and the beautiful gouache and mixed-media illustrations work well to support the text. Through the upbeat, first-person narrative of a Metis ("mixed-blood") boy, this picture book tells the early-nineteenth-century history of the busy Fort William trading post at the head of the Great Lakes, where Native peoples traded furs with the representatives from the North West Company, which brought supplies from Montreal. As in Pendziwol's Dawn Watch (2004), the fiction is purposive: the boy helps rescue a white gentleman trader whose canoe is destroyed in a storm on the lake. But the clear, mixed-media illustrations capture the people and the place, contrasting the harsh storm in the wilderness with the final "rendezvous" at the fort, where the brave voyageurs (including the boy's father), the traders, and the local community dance and celebrate together. Fantastic picture book about voyageurs and the Metis culture

The Red Sash is an excellent picture book depicting the history of the fur trade in Canada and introducing children to the importance of the relationships among the First Nations and M�tis people of Canada, the French Canadian voyageurs, and the British-based North West Trading Company. While these relationships were at often times tenuous, this story focuses on the cultural pride of the M�tis people who played a key role in the fur trade of the 1800′s. I highly recommend this book as an excellent resource in elementary schools across Canada as a way to educate children about the fur trade industry and the important role of the voyageurs in Canadian history. Ages 5+
