Extremely Slow!

This book...ah!Again, I had expected a lot ONLY to turn up TRULY disappointed by this book and its *LACK* of a strong narrative and a convincing storyline! Numbers,figures,excessive technicalities plague it.. Still given it 2 stars for the cover image and the vision of the author for creating a series of books known by "Numbers"!

Windows XP for Dummies does a good job in its role as the flagship of the Dummies line, providing Windows novices with a guided introduction to Microsoft's latest and most feature-rich operating system for everyday computer users. Its treatment of computer, Windows, and Internet fundamentals is among the best on the market, and author Andy Rathbone has an appealing way of writing that's simultaneously fun and detail-rich. If you're a Windows novice--meaning you don't know how to undelete a file that's been sent to the Recycle Bin, or what a Web browser is, or what it means to "cut and paste" text--you will get a lot out of Rathbone's work.

Some aspects of this book could be better, such as the part of the networking chapter that calls for an Ethernet hub without noting that a switch, though possibly more expensive, would do the job better, without any additional hassle. The networking coverage also does an inadequate job of explaining how to share a cable modem or DSL connection among several computers. This is a serious shortcoming, and we're getting to the point in our evolution as a society of computer users at which we can assume that everyone knows what the "Cancel" button does and would rather read about the newer, more exciting things that Windows XP can do. Even the dummies aren't that dumb anymore.

But that said--and Rathbone does confine a lot of the really elementary stuff to a skinny introductory chapter--this book is a boon to people who aren't familiar with Windows XP or its immediate predecessors (including Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me). It's also great for people who have learned a little about Windows on the job or from their kids, and want to expand on what they know. --David Wall

Windows Sharp

These days, so many people really don't have the slightest idea of knowing how to sincerely operate a computer. With all the hype over which to choose from, there is always one thing they all have in common, the operating system. Most computers today that are being released, are geared towards the Windows XP operating systems, XP Professional, Home edition, and the widely released Media Center editions. Nevertheless, with all the hype of Windows upcoming operating system the Vista, many are looking to buy a computer just to upgrade to the next level. But, if you can't even place your fingers on the button.

Windows XP For Dummies is a very detailed, and diverse guide which mainly focuses on the Home and Professional editions. The book gives a lot in each simple way to operate each part of the operating system from how to configure the taskbars to either the traditional taskbar menus, or the contemporary, sleek Windows XP menu. The book gives tips on how to use each main part of the operating system from the Windows Media Player 10th edition, to knowing how you can simply copy your media onto a blank disc or DVD recordable disc. The book gives detailed words on how to maintain and use each part of the operating system with todbits for anybody who gets stuck in a rough problem. For example, if you find that the computer freezes up, you can simply hold the power button down for a few seconds, and it will manually shut down. You'll also know how to make the backwards compatabilty from programs from previous versions of Windows like 98 or Millenium editions, for efficency on the XP edition where there would be problems.

All in all, I just wish this edition could've done a better job at focusing on the Media Center editons of Windows XP, and gave a few more charts about each part of the operating system. Nevertheless, the Windows XP for Dummies is a still a great buy for any new computer owner. I really am learning a whole lot with this great book, and if you're into a new computer, this is a must buy for you.

Solve all your XP problems

This isn't the sort of book you just pick up and read. This is the kind of book you grab in an emergency and it helps solve your computer problem. Wonderful as a reference on performing tasks you aren't familiar with. I Consider this book a "necessity". Even though I am somewhat computer savvy, this book still is needed for unusual jobs you might not do on a daily basis. If you have an XP computer, you need this book.

About the Author

Sharad Manohar holds MSc�(Structural Engineering) degree, from University of London. He is a graduate�from College of Engineering Pune, FIE (India). He has extensive experience of over five decades, in construction, design, management and handling national and international contracts of a wide range of structures, including those in high seismic areas. He has worked with Gammon India Ltd, Tata Consulting Engineers as Chief Civil Engineer and Head R&D. He continues to provide consulting services and training in Structural Engineering and Management. He played a key role in the implementation of technical training centres for the entire cement industry in India. Mr. Manohar is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from Indian Concrete Institute. He has authored a book on Tall Chimneys: Design and Construction and published several technical journal papers. He is a member of a national committee appointed by the Reserve Bank of India to develop guidelines for assessment of structural safety of� their existing buildings.

Suhasini Madhekar�holds a�PhD in Structural Engineering, from IIT Bombay. She is presently working as a faculty member in the department of Applied Mechanics, at College of Engineering Pune. She is FIE (India) and life member of ISTE, ISSE,�INDIAN ASTR, IIBE and ICI. Dr. Madhekar has teaching experience of over 24 years at undergraduate and post-graduate level.�She is a recognised PhD guide of Pune University and has published several papers in reputed journals and proceedings. She is the recipient of the COEP Star Award, an Excellence in Teaching Award at College of Engineering Pune. She was awarded the Alumni Distinguished Faculty Fellow fellowship, by Alumni Association of College of Engineering Pune.

About the Author
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was the most popular and admired American poet of the nineteenth century. Born in Portland, Maine, and educated at Bowdoin College, Longfellow’s ambition was always to become a writer; but until mid-life his first profession was the teaching rather than the production of literature, at his alma mater (1829-35) and then at Harvard (1836-54). His teaching career was punctuated by two extended study-tours of Europe, during which Longfellow made himself fluent in all the major Romance and Germanic languages. Thanks to a fortunate marriage and the growing popularity of his work, from his mid-thirties onwards Longfellow, ensconced in a comfortable Cambridge mansion, was able to devote an increasingly large fraction of his energies to the long narrative historical and mythic poems that made him a household word, especially Evangeline (1847), The Song of Hiawatha (1855), The Courtship of Miles Standish (1858), and Tales of a Wayside Inn (1863, 1872, 1873). Versatile as well as prolific, Longfellow also won fame as a writer of short ballads and lyrics, and experimented in the essay, the short story, the novel, and the verse drama. Taken as a whole, Longfellow’s writings show a breadth of literary learning, an understanding of western languages and cultures, unmatched by any American writer of his time.

Susan Jeffers is the illustrator of such distinguished picture books as Three Jovial Huntsmen, a Caldecott Honor book; Rachel Field's Hitty; and the ABBY Award-winning Brother Eagle, Sister Sky, which was also a New York Times besteller. She lives in New York.

I have this poem memorized because my father recited it to me so many times as a child. This illustrated version has beautiful pictures that capture the fact that this is the story of child and embody the lyric quality of Longfellows poem.

"By the shores of Gitche Gumee," begins Longfellow's famous poem, "Song of Hiawatha."

Presented here, stanza-by-stanza, we read the delicious language of Hiawatha's story, from birth to teenage years. It is not the legend of an American Indian that makes it so inviting, or even Longfellow's excellent use of simple English. It is the story of a young boy who happens to be an American Indian. Any boy or girl, especially those growing up where winter nights are frosty, where pine trees whisper, and owls and owlets hoot and laugh, will enjoy the prosaic poem.

It is like reading a walk through the woods.

Longfellow's work is not the only strength on this edition. Susan Jeffers' drawings bring in artistic realism.

A MUST for any and all Disney fans!!

This is not just a book for Disney art lovers -- it is a terrific background on the Disney Company as a whole and the process in the art of animation. It goes into detail as to the extent of Walt's genius and leadership abilities. Never the less, the art in this collection is phenomenal!! I personally love the preliminary sketches and the process that eventually become what you see on the screen. There is also a chapter on the role the Disney Studios played during WWII. I will cherish this edition for many years to come.

A must for any Disney fan

I have all previous editions of this book. This edition continues the excellence of these prior editions with a new section on Pixar, new entries on recent animated features including "Tangled", plus updated theme park information. His summary of each movie is honest and informative. As usual, the illustrations are lavish in scope and quantity.

Terrific book on the Art of Disney

This book is packed with photographs, drawings and artwork from Walt Disney's life and from the Walt Disney Company. In addition to the all the images, there is a lot of good information about Walt Disney and the Disney Company in the text. Even the cover of this book is well done and attractive. Anyone could feel proud to have this book sitting on his or her coffee table.
The book was well researched and contains a lot of historical information about Walt Disney and the Disney Company. In terms of information on Walt, it is not as complete as some of the biographies of Disney that I read. However, it is a very good overview of Disney's life and a good chronology of the Disney Company.
I appreciated the way that the artwork was coordinated with the text and well explained. There is artwork and photographs from Disney's very early days all the way through to the 1990s. The author did not seem to miss anything in this book.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys the art of Walt Disney and the Disney Company and would like to know both a little better.

About the Author

Peter Wallensteen is Senior Professor of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden, since 2012. He held the Dag Hammarskj�ld Chair of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University (1985–2012). He is also the Richard G. Starmann, Senior Research Professor of Peace Studies at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA (since 2006). He directs the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) and the Special Program on International Targeted Sanctions (SPITS). His Understanding Conflict Resolution: War, Peace and the Global System (Sage, earlier edition, available also in an Arabic translation) is used in teaching around the world. His book Peace Research: Theory and Practice (Routledge 2011) demonstrates his range of research interests and has recently been translated into Chinese. Recently he also edited together with Ambassador Anders Bjurner Regional Organizations and Peacemaking: Challengers to the UN? (Routledge 2015). In 2010, he and Isak Svensson published The Go-Between (United States Institute of Peace Press), a study of mediation efforts by the renowned Swedish diplomat Jan Eliasson. Wallensteen has published widely on conflict trends, conflict resolution, mediation, prevention, sanctions and the United Nations.
