Neuroscience: You're doing it wrong!

Miguel Nicolelis is a Brazilian born, world-renowned neuroscientist working out of Duke University in North Carolina. He is seen as the public face of the recently begun and rapidly expanding field of Brain-Machine Interfaces, and has done much to bring widespread attention to not only that field, but to neuroscience in general. Part of why Nicolelis is seen as the representative of this field is because he brings academic research into a human context, making the ambitious claim that his research has led to a “human-to-human brain” interface, as well as giving a quadriplegic youth the ability to deliver the opening kick in the 2014 world cup held in Nicolelis’ own Brazil. This theme of bringing science, particularly neuroscience, into a more public and relevant context is one underlying his recent book, Beyond Boundaries.
The author starts his historical narrative by describing the two camps of thought in neuroscience, which he terms “localizationist” and “distributionist.” Localizationists are interested in showing how the brains spatial organization is both largely pre-determined and that there is a strong connection between spatial organization and function of brain regions. They also aim to reduce this connection to the individual neuron, imparting emergent physiological capabilities to the single cell. Distributionists, on the other hand, are more interested in how the neuronal “symphonies”, his term for the aggregate of brain activity across multiple regions, each composed of neuronal with constantly plastic and changeable functions. Dr. Nicolelis is unabashedly in the distributionist camp and this loyalty, which often borders on ranting about the ideas he opposes, is apparent throughout the book.
Dr. Nicolelis then spends much of the next several chapters going through a history of early and formative neuroscience research, invoking several of its well-known early researchers such as Cajal and Sherrington. Throughout this he shows how distributionist and localizationist thought battled for control over our understanding of the brain, and localizationist interpretations dominated for much of the time. In Nicolelis’ mind, however, the truth of the matter ultimately lies with a more holistic and systemic, rather than individual-cellular, view of the brain. The metaphor he uses is a symphony, like how a large group of instruments can indeed be described as many individual parts, the symphony cannot be simply reduced to them. The whole of the music a symphony creates is encoded as something greater than the sum of its parts; the same is true for the brain operations are greater than the sum of actions of individual neurons.
For the second half of the book, Nicolelis goes through a nonlinear history of Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMIs), jumping back and forth in time to serve the point of both furthering distributionist ideas but also showing the ways research across disparate geographical locations and temporal periods has been connected to make something more than just the sum of several academic papers. Continuing the distributionist metaphor and theme of the book, he shows how modern BMI research is an emergent phenomenon that is greater than just the compilation of its history, that there are gains made through original thought and in the connections between seemingly unconnected research.
Miguel Nicolelis’ book, while an extremely useful text for those academically interested in neuroscience and in Brain Machine Interfaces, shines most as a book made for those who lack exposure to science in general and neuroscience in particular. It does require some foundational knowledge of biology however, including the knowledge that the body is made up of units known as cells, and that the brain is made up of specialized cells known as neurons. While further knowledge of neurobiology would be helpful, like how neurons “signal” to each other using a combination of electrical and chemical signals, which is not absolutely necessary to get meaning from the book.
Nicolelis weaves an autobiographical narrative throughout the text, frequently connecting ideas and research to his own life experiences. Often he explains complex scientific achievements alongside powerful and understandable human metaphors to his own life, like his experience with a conductor during medical school, an experience that served as his foundation for comparing the brain to a collection of musicians. He also explains his multiple intended and pursued career paths, including once dreaming of becoming a Brazilian soccer star, prior to becoming the renowned researcher he is now. With this connection of the text and its subjects to his own life, Dr. Nicolelis both the scientific process and the researchers who utilize the scientific method. He takes what, at first blush, seems an overwhelmingly complex topic, studying the brain and eventually having the brain and computers communicate with one another, and then makes himself and the topics of the book relatable and understandable to most any reader who has the type of interests to seek out a popular press book on science. If a reader seeks out this book, they likely already possess the requisite knowledge to understand it.
Making the scientific process more human is only the start of it however-he then goes on to explain important aspects of science as an institution which aren’t often seen by the public, which the reader can now understand because of his aforementioned humanizing. Interwoven through much of his book are the conflicting ideals of localizationist and distributionist thought, a debate that has gone on for well over a century and continues to this day. This is a part of science not often understood even by those within it-that of competing and equally viable and “proven” ideas and narratives that, unfortunately, contradict one another. Science is often seen as uncovering facts and truth, but often there is a long period of competing facts and competing truths. For example, in the history of thought on the development of organisms, widespread acceptance of Darwin’s ideas is only a recent phenomenon, one preceded by intense and impassioned debates. Nicolelis gives us an insider’s view on such a debate still raging within neuroscience-if he is right, then future neuroscientists will see what is now called “distributionist” thought as factually correct, but the meaning to most people will be his insight into the process of competing ideas within science.
Miguel Nicolelis weaves three histories into his book-the history of neuroscience, and within that the history of Brain Machine Interfaces, and within even that, the history of Miguel Nicolelis. The book relates all three to one another, and then makes Nicolelis someone we can all find a bit of ourselves in, allowing a more publicly accessible understanding of him, his work, and science in general. He draws us in with this attractive idea of connecting our brains to computers, but then shows us the impassioned history and modern practice of neuroscience. It is for these reasons-the book’s popular appeal, accessibility, and educational value that I give it 5 stars. To anyone who is academically interested in Brain-Machine interfaces, mystified by the scientific process, or just wants to know the fascinating life story of this now famous Brazilian, I recommend this book to you!

Sound science accompanied by enjoyable anecdotes

The author takes you on the remarkable account of 25+ years of research in neuroscience, from his medicine years at Sao Paulo University to Duke's Center for Neuroengineering. Dr. Nicolelis summarizes the conclusions of his remarkable experiments in ten "principles of ensemble neurophysiology", supporting his distributionist theory of the brain. The book has plenty of music and sports allegories that make a very entertaining reading.
My only concern is that the technical language may be a little difficult to understand for the layman, but I applaud the author's effort not to dumb down the description of the experiments.
In conclusion this work is a must-read for anyone whose work is related to neuroscience, and remains a highly recommendable book for the curious minds that do not mind delving a little bit in the technical aspect of neural engineering.

Monkeys, tools, and boundaries

Great read for this previous friend of a Capuchin monkey years ago in LaPaz, Bolivia. I can attest that monkeys eagerly interface with tools e.g., put on lipstick with or without a mirror; without any human intervention, selectively [apparently based on empirical experience] choose and to all appearances thoroughly enjoy pharmacoactive plants of the psychodelic variety, ride pet cats like horses, and guard patios better than any watch dog. It is not surprising to me that their cousins, the Rheusus, partner with others in neuroscience labs in the study of the use of robotic tools.

My only objection is the title "'Beyond' Boundaries." If my understanding of what the author is saying is correct, then, once incorporated into my neural circuitry, a robot I am using to pick up tools in New York from my office in St. Louis is as much a part of me as my grabber is when I am picking up an object lying on the floor, or as much as a modern artificial limb is to an athlete who has lost his/her birth limb. It is all tool-using capacity, in which we have gone from

1. selecting, making or using tools nearby to...

2. using and making communication tools with nearby and distant uses to...

3. using and programming robots to use tools nearby to...

4. to using and programming robots to use tools from a distance...

5. directing the robotic use of tools nearby, not by any intermediary program, but only by means of neural networks in the brain to...

6. directing the robotic use of tools at a distance, not by an intermediary program, but only by means of neural networks in the brain...

I agree, it is a giant step forward, even an evolutionary step forward. But, I am not sure it is 'beyond' boundaries. To me, it is more like the very first time event of riding a bike, with..., "Look, Mom, no hands!" --

In this book, Nicolelis shares with us his adventure of learning how to use our brains to use tools with no hands! Breathtaking, explosive, an evolutionary leap, but not beyond boundaries: If we can envision something, we can do it. Some, like Dr. Nicolelis, have enormous vision, the capacity to bring that vision to life, and recount it beautifully.

Read. This. Book. Now.

Ever read a Kim Jones book before? If not, read this one. Like now! Right mother-effin' now. Clubwhore is BY FAR her best words to date. The MC series books may not be your thing. The lifestyle and concepts may not float your boat. But Clubwhore is SO MUCH MORE than your average MC series book. So much more. It's raw. Gritty. Beautiful. Painful. Gut wrenching. Passionate. Loving. And down right sexy. It's full of so much hurt and love and compassion and sorrow it will leave you breathless and your heart beyond full. It will have you laughing out loud, shaking your head at their antics, crying into a pile of tissues, and swooning so mother-effing hard you won't know what to do with yourself. I couldn't put it down. I never wanted it to end. As pain ripped through my chest and tenderness soothed my soul, I kept devouring each word, page, and chapter like it was my last. Bravo to you, Kim Jones, because this book is a definite top read of 2016--and I don't care how early in the year it is, I'm stating that as fact! Buy. This. Book!

All I have to say is WOW!!!!

Let me say ,Clubwhore , is the best book I have read this year so far. Kim Jones had me at the prologue and it just got better. The female character, Delilah Scott, is a club girl and she owns it. SSA Bryce is a larger than life hot alpha Devil's Renegade MC member and he takes what he wants and doesn't ask permission. Loved both their characters. I got to read updates on some of my favorite Devil's Renegades, which I love. It flowed easily. Had to fight myself to put it down. Kept me on the edge of my seat. The emotions it showed were widespread and some heartbreaking. Two such strong characters who fought ghost from their past to survive their today. Excellent. Great job Kim Jones.

4 Unleash The Beast stars........d:)

This was a very different kind of love story. It had all the normal components:: proximity, attraction, physical chemistry, and while unconventional, even wooing per se. Additionally, there's believable characters that could exist within the gritty world of MC's. Where it veers off the beaten path is by focusing more on personal lives and little on club business, not to mention, the subject matter itself. Specifically, this is Delilah's story; she's paid to bartend, cook, clean and be a clubwhore. Believe me when I tell you she is a broken and damaged woman. Her childhood was filled with heartbreaking physical and emotional abuse that left her craving physical pain and abuse. So much so, that if she didn't endure physical pain on a regular basis she'd suffer from with uncontrollable panic attacks and have withdrawal like symptoms. Bryce is a the SA for a different chapter of the MC who comes to help out and ultimately transfers to the Hattiesburg chapter. He's the typical bada$$ biker who doesn't put up with bs from anyone. He isn't looking to have a relationship or have an ol' lady. He does, however, develop a soft spot for Delilah. If your looking for a romantic hearts and flowers story, this isn't it. If you're looking for a story about a gruff, tough, hard living man who teaches a very damaged woman how to leash the beast and tame her inner demons, then you've found it right here. This is written from Delilah's point of view and while we got access to how her mind works and what motivated her actions and behavior, it was never so much that I got bored or felt stuck in her head. Again, this is not a fluffy lighthearted read, nor is it for the faint at heart, but it is a well told story about a man who falls in love and teaches his woman that she's worthy and perfect, in spite of her issues.......d:)

Grade 3–6—Using several figures from Norse mythology, Gaiman has written a thoughtful and quietly humorous fantasy that younger Percy Jackson fans will enjoy. Twelve-year-old Odd hasn't had a good couple of years: his father died rescuing a pony that fell overboard during a Viking raid, his leg was crippled during a tree-felling accident, and his mother married a man he dislikes. So, in the midst of what should be spring ("Winter hung in there, like an invalid refusing to die"), he sets out for a cabin in the wilderness, figuring that anything will be better than home. Soon after arriving, a fox leads him to an enormous bear whose paw is caught in a tree; a large eagle circles overhead. Odd shows kindness and bravery when helping the bear, learning afterward that these three animals are gods who have been transformed by the Frost Giant. Odd is determined to help them, and his ultimate encounter with the Frost Giant is especially interesting, tweaking the tradition of small boys getting the better of giants. From Midgard to Asgard, and back

A review by Hank Wagner, co-author (with Christopher Golden and Stephen R. Bissette) of the upcoming Prince of Stories: The Many Worlds of Neil Gaiman, due out from St. Martins in October 2008:

Gaiman wrote Odd and the Frost Giants as his personal contribution to World Book Day in the United Kingdom, which exists purely to inspire children to read. It's an annual event where a group of authors write books for nothing and publishers publish them for nothing. These books are then sold for �1 each to children who have been given �1 Book Tokens. On its website, the World Book Day organization ([...]) describes it as "the biggest annual event promoting the enjoyment of books and reading."

Regrettably, at least for US residents, there are no current plans to publish this charming, 14,500 word novelette in America. Happily, the book is available through Amazon.uk and it's only �1, a bargain even with current exchange rates. Be warned, however, the shipping charge will make the final cost seem relatively steep.

The good news is that it's worth the cost: the story, enhanced by several illustrations from frequent Gaiman collaborator Mark Buckingham, is delightful.

As you may have guessed from the title, the novelette deals with characters from Norse myth, a subject Gaiman became entranced with at a very young age. It tells the story of the crippled Viking boy Odd, who, running away from home, is befriended by a group of forest animals--a fox, a bear, and an eagle--who are far more than they seem. In truth, they are the Norse gods Loki, Thor, and Odin, respectively. Hoodwinked by a crafty and vengeful Frost Giant, they have been transformed into animals and exiled from Asgard. Odd offers his help, and travels with the gods from Midgard to their homeland of Asgard, where the plucky lad plans to bargain with the Frost Giant in attempt to save the day.

No more about the story, you'll have to discover its significant pleasures on your own. Be assured though that this is vintage Gaiman, a lively, memorable tale that, although modern in its sensibilities, treats its source material in a respectful, affectionate, and humorous manner, making that material more accessible for modern readers, many of whom are likely encountering these characters and settings for the first time.

A delightful new tale set in old Norse roots with an unlikely young hero

Neil Gaiman's Odd and the Frost Giants is a delight, a new tale in an old tradition, the mythological world of the Norse gods. Though intended for young readers, older readers can enjoy it as well. It is also a tale that reminds us that heroes come in all sizes, often from the most unlikely of beginnings, and that daring and wits can be even more important than strength and agility.

A good example of how Gaiman imbues his characters with personality is shown in this scene were the boy Odd is woken by the sounds of voices in the hut where he has taken refuge along with a strange trio of animals:

"It's because of you we're in this mess."
"I thought we had a deal. I thought we weren't going to keep harping on about a trivial little mistake..."
"You call this trivial?"
And then a third voice, high and raw, screeched.
"Silence."
There was silence. Odd rolled over. There was a glow from the fire embers, enough to see the inside of the hut, enough to confirm to Odd that there were not another three people in there with him. It was just him and the fox and the bear and the eagle...
Whatever they are, thought Odd, they don't seem to eat people. He sat up, leaned against the wall. The bear and the eagle both ignored him. The fox darted him a green-eyed glance.
"You were talking," said Odd.
The animals looked at Odd and at one another. If they did not actually say "Who? Us?" it was there in their expressions, in the way they held themselves.
"_Somebody_ was talking," said Odd, "and it wasn't me. There isn't anyone else in here. That means it was you lot. And there's no point in arguing."
"We weren't arguing," said the bear. "Because we can't talk." Then it said, "Oops."
The fox and the eagle glared at the bear, who put a paw over its eyes and looked ashamed of itself.
Odd sighed. "Which one of you wants to explain what's going on?" he said.
"Nothing's going on," said the fox brightly. "Just a few talking animals. Nothing to worry about. Happens every day. We'll be out of your hair first thing in the morning."
The eagle fixed Odd with its one good eye. Then it turned to the fox. "Tell!"
The fox shifted uncomfortably. "Why me?"
"Oh," said the bear, "I don't know. Possibly because it's _all_your_fault_?"

Also, given that this story was intended to spur interest in reading, Gaiman succeeds at that as well, offering little tidbits such as this one that will entice younger readers to go beyond this story and read more:

"Old Odin left his chair, and walked towards them. He wiped the goose grease from his mouth with his sleeve, smearing even more grease all over his grey beard. He said, quietly, into Odd's ear, 'Do you know what spring it was you drank from, boy? Where the water came from? Do you know what it cost me to drink there, many years ago?'"

Gaiman leaves the questions unanswered. It is not hard to imagine any number of curious readers going on to find the answers themselves by reading the original Norse mythological tales that provided the background and setting for this new one.

All in all, a pure pleasure to read, with very nice illustrations by Brett Helquist. Highly recommended.

This short story for children is basically everything I love about Neil Gaiman broken down into a quick 90 pages. The writing is fun and fluid with a knack for description that leaves just enough up to the imagination. The way he weaves the Norse Gods into his story is fun, exciting, and realistic. It gives just a little taste of what the Norse Gods are like, thus invoking curiosity about them in any reader (and what a better way to learn more about them than to go read Neil Gaimain's other books - American Gods, to be specific!) - which I think is exactly what is needed in a children's book. Any book that makes kids curious and inspires them to learn gets an A+ in my book.
In general, I find that Gaiman does adult novels and comics better than he does children's books. At least, I used to feel that way until the awesomeness of the Graveyard Book. This book aims at a younger audience than that of the graveyard book and still manages to be fantastic for an adult audience.
With Odd and the Frost Giants, Neil Gaiman shows that he is, indeed, able to take the awesomeness of his ideas and make them accessible to children. And yet, through it all, he throws in the occasional reference that children may not understand (and don't need to understand to appreciate the book) but that leave the adult riveted through the entire epic journey.
All in all, this book ends up being the perfect read for a mother or father to read to their child. Or for a child just getting into books. Or for an adult with a quick half hour in the waiting room.
It was just wonderful.

Very readable overview

This is a perfect choice for the novice reader who is trying to get a basic understanding of the whys and wherefores of compentency models. It's very readable book and not nearly as dry as I might have expected. In particular, the authors' copious use of real-world examples, cases and models is extremely helpful. I even got some great ideas for project management that I'll be able to apply broadly in my work, regardless of whether or not my organization undertakes a competency modeling project.
My only criticism is that the book focuses exclusively on CMs in a HRM context; there is no real discussion of industry-scale models, which was my main reason for reading the book. Nevertheless, a very good resource for a beginner.

A good coverage of the field of competency models

Competency Models have become a must for an up-to-date HRM system - I have been helping companies to build this kind of models since 1996. These models make great tools for selection, training and development, appraisal and succession planning. Unfortunately, until I came accross this book, I found that most of the reference works to this field are quite unaccessible, not the kind I would put into the hands of a newcomer. This is a practical book, showing why competency models are important and helping the reader to go through the complete process of setting up such a system, including a chapter on how to sell the idea to others in the organisation - I wish some of the people I work with would have read this book before, that would have smoothened the problems that are caused if these steps aren't followed well. The book also shows how to transform your competence model into a 360� feedback questionnaire. It was the first time I came accross a book explaining how to do that! The only area that I found a bit weak is the compentency-interview (both for building the model, als doing behavior-based interviews for recruiting), but maybe that's a bias coming from my own expertise in that domain (my book "7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence" includes a full chapter on how to ask the right questions).
Conclusion - whether you know about Competency Models or not - add this book to your library! And if you are a consultant in the field of competency models, this is a book you might recommend to your customers.

Emocionante y sencillamente delicioso

Al principio cuando comenc� la lectura del libro pens� que se trataba de una historia de un amargado y quejumbroso �u, pero eso fue cambiando poco a poco.

Los personajes est�n bastante bien logrados y llenos de energ�a que van dosificando a nuestro amigo Ur de una forma pr�ctica y de f�cil entendimiento.

Cada l�der a su propia forma demuestra en sus triunfos y en sus fracasos como las decisiones tomadas y tratan de mostrarle el camino "correcto" pero como siempre el personaje principal tiene su propia forma de hacer las cosas diferentes.

Este libro nos muestra un poco como piensan los l�deres y como nos afecta de manera individual y como creemos aveces son despiadados por que no tenemos la capacidad de ver de una forma macro.

En fin este libro puede ayudarnos a identificar nuestras propias faltas y desconocimiento y as� llevarnos a fortalecernos y aceptar que cada quien tiene su funci�n y g�stenos o no todas son importantes.

Y al final gracias a esas funciones no tan gratas logramos el objetivo deseado para el bien com�n.

Excelente libr�

Excelente libr�, al leerla me fui identificando con los personajes, aunque hace referencia a una historia ficticia, se nota como el escritor se refiere a diferentes aspectos de la vida misma. El libro tiene perfecta relacion entre capitulos y motiva al lector a continuar con la lectura en busca del que pasara en los siguientes capitulos.
