I would not recommend this as a first choice if you're deciding between ...

This book is... okay. At times (few) it was somewhat thought provoking, but the amount of philosophical analogies the author attempted came across as very self-indulgent to me. I would bet that half the pages or more mention a vagina or draw some sort of obvious parallel to the female organs. I wouldn't say the author is a "misogynist" in the normal sense of the word, but it's clear that the most interesting part about the female characters he created are how (and how often) they think about sex.

In short, I would not recommend this as a first choice if you're deciding between books, but if you happen to pick it up somewhere for cheap, maybe its worth forming your own opinion about.

Love Tom Robbins funny, deep, unique

I've read almost all Tom Robbins books. They are funny, deep, unique and compelling. There is just enough sex to be sexy, not dirty. Ok, a little dirty. There is just enough philosophy to be engaging and stimulating without being obtuse.

excellent as usual

When the library has nothing new AND interesting to offer, you can count od dear old TOM ROBBINS for some narrative magic. This novel has been resting on my shelf for ages, which is surprising because I'm a devoted fan of the author and I've enjoyed his other novels (both the earlier ones and those from the more recent times) immensely. Anyway, I finally tackled this little masterpiece and, as usual, I wasn't disappointed. The talking objects parts put me a bit off right at the outset but then it turned out to be a clever narrative device that fits nicely with the rest of the text. How silly of me, how could I doubt robbins' judgement? His novels accomplish an impressive feat. That is, they manage to be both entertaining (this is a page-turner, trust me, robbins knows how to keep you hooked, pumping enough "suspense" and "expectation" into each page so as to make sure that the story never gets boring....) and "deep". It's a perfect marriage between low-brow/gonzo narrative and highbrow sophistication. The philosophical passages are astounding, often they took their premise from goofy, no-nonsense statement and from that starting point they evolve into insightful (and often enlightening), albeit slightly mad, commentary on the state of politics, religion, arts and....well, pretty much everything in between. It has been written that Tom Robbins is "a god of eloquence, who refines the goofy into revelations". You can definitely believe those words, trust my advice on that one.

About the Author
Originally run in the Daily Mirror Newspaper from 1932 to 1959, Jane reached her peak of popularity during WWII when she became known as the 'Forces Girlfriend'. Sir Winston Churchill himself was said to be a fan and credited Jane for the British 36th Division's historic six mile advanced in 1944, following her legendary bath-time exit in a French Naafi Canteen. Created by Norman Pett.

A beloved British comics/pin-up icon returns

What Milton Caniff's alluring Miss Lace was for war-weary, sex-starved American GIs during World War II, THE DAILY MIRROR's Jane was for hard-pressed British "Tommies" -- and both more and less besides. "More," because Jane was not created specifically to boost wartime morale, but had instead been appearing in THE MIRROR since 1932. "Less," because Jane, rather than being an alluring, iconic totem like Miss Lace, (1) actively got involved in the war effort as an intelligence officer and (2) took her endearing habit of frequently being accidentally disrobed to a higher plateau, often appearing fully or partially nude. Jane's raiment-relinquished doings were so racy for the time that even a "cleaned-up" version of the strip failed to catch on in the more prurient U.S. Titan Books, which has previously reprinted such British comic strips as DAN DARE and MODESTY BLAISE, has now given us an eyeful of what we've been missing by reprinting several continuities from Jane's memorable wartime career.

Jane started as a "flapper" character of sorts. Perpetually accompanied by a dachshund named Fritz (amateur Freudians, the time is now yours), she was a gag-a-day character until "Don" Freeman assumed the writing chores in 1938 and introduced continuity into the mix -- not to mention plenty of puns, wordplay, and high-toned literary allusions. Artist Norman Pett delineated the "misadventures" of the leggy blonde beauty -- many of which involved pratfalls that divested Jane of at least the top layer of her clothes -- in a style hovering somewhere in the vicinity of Caniff territory, though with somewhat cruder figure drawing (especially noticeable in backgrounds and angled facial profiles, where Pett had a tendency to give everyone, including Jane, overly large noses). World War II was the best thing ever to happen to the strip, giving Jane a less frivolous purpose in life and providing Pett with the perfect excuse to make the comic a literal "strip." Following the war, Pett left for other projects and the strip slowly foundered, finally expiring in the late 1950s. Several later attempts to revive JANE all tanked. However, Chrystabel Leighton-Porter, the primary model for Jane -- she also appeared in movies and stage shows -- remained popular with aging veterans until her death in 2000.

In this collection of strips from 1944-1945, Jane goes "undercover" (that seems to be an inappropriate word, somehow) as a member of NAAFI (a service organization that provided refreshments and such to British troops) and ENSA (the British version of the USO) and encounters appropriately nasty Nazi agents and guerrilla fighters. The depictions of Jane's foes aren't exactly subtle; the "lingerie salesman" who's actually a spy scoping out an RAF airfield is so transparently a bad guy that he should be wearing a SPY VS. SPY-style trenchcoat and dark glasses. Far more interesting are the interactions between Jane and her there-and-back-again beau, Lieutenant Georgie Porgie -- Freeman wasn't that great with character names, either -- and a shy NAAFI worker named Dinah, whom Jane convinces to shake loose of that metaphorical corset and ultimately snare a fiancee. As one might imagine, Jane picks up a few would-be suitors along the way, a French secret agent and a Russian officer among them, but stays loyal to Georgie (whom she would eventually marry at the end of the strip's run). What makes Jane interesting to me is the fact that she is often used as the butt of physical humor -- of the clothes-shedding variety and otherwise -- yet Pett and Freeman obviously respect her as a clever, courageous woman who may be somewhat naive but is aware of her naivete on some level. Jane could very easily have been turned into a buffoonish bimbo a la Little Annie Fanny, but her creators refused to let that happen. Probably Jane's closest American relative is Sally the Sleuth from SPICY DETECTIVE STORIES, but Jane is a far more interesting (and far better-drawn) character.

Titan includes a few tantalizing extras in the form of a vintage newspaper article from the Canadian armed forces newspaper THE MAPLE LEAF and some beautiful full-color reproductions from JANE'S JOURNAL, a postwar collection of pin-ups and poems. I am, however, disappointed that the modern perspective on the character was not given more attention. We get a one-page glorified blurb, "Introducing Jane," but that's about it. For the American release of the book, some explanatory footnotes on terms and acronyms used by the characters would also have been helpful. For all of Freeman's clever wordsmithing, though, the "madame" is the message here. If you like classic "good girl" art by the likes of Caniff, Bill Ward, and Dan DeCarlo, you'll certainly enjoy this collection.

About the Author

Larry Goldstein has received several distinguished teaching awards, given more than fifty Conference and Colloquium talks & addresses, and written more than fifty books in math and computer programming.� He received his PhD at Princeton and his BA and MA at the University of Pennsylvania. He also teaches part time at Drexel University.

David Schneider, who is known widely for his tutorial software, holds a BA degree from Oberlin College and a PhD from MIT.� He is currently an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland. He has authored eight widely used math texts, fourteen highly acclaimed computer books, and three widely used mathematics software packages. He has also produced instructional videotapes at both the University of Maryland and the BBC.

Martha Siegel holds a BA from Russell Sage College, attended Rensselear Polytechnic Institute as a special student, and received his PhD at the University of Rochester. From 1966 until 1971 she taught at Goucher University in Baltimore. Since 1971 she has been a professor at Towson State University, also in Maryland. Professor Siegel has been on the writing team of this book since the fifth edition and is also the co-author of a precalculus reform book.

Always ready for a new Jade Crow book.

I love to read Annie Bellet's, Jade Crow novels. Partly because as a sixty-something year old man, I like the fact that Jade Crow is a mature woman. She is about 50, but looks like she's in her twenties, and her partner Alek is about the same age. She is a sorceress and she's slowly and Alek is a were-tiger and is in very good shape. She has a lot of friends, human and supernatural but looks out for all of them as if they were her family, and they are. Themes of teamwork and trust in each other are all through the series, but more so in this book. Which has two crises going on at the same time. There are no real surprises in the book, just continued character development and growth.

I am laughing my butt off as I read this book. I just had to stop and write this review to catch my breath.
Imagine you live in the modern world and you are a gamer. Now imagine you and your friends get hired to investigate a real "hunted house" with a suspicious "basement". The Scooby Gang was never as cool (nor, as bad-assed) as this book's heroes.
The puns and one-liners abound with perfect timing.
Favorite lines thus far as the heroes proceed through the hidden door and down into the darkness: "Bet you wish you had a weapon now", "Shut up, Levi".

The sorceress' tale continues

The Twenty-Sided Sorceress' story continues to unfold in this latest tale. The tone of this book is different from the earlier releases, a tribute to the dynamism that author Bellet has woven into her characters. Jade's experiences have changed her as is evident here. As she faces vampires, ghouls and necromancers, she is less impulsive, more willing to accept help from her friends rather than work alone. Her relationship with Alek has also deepened and it is a thing of beauty. Bellet conveys in subtle ways how rich and powerful it is, and it is so moving to see and feel it as you read. It's a great story.
