An excellent reference work on ayurvedic herbal revitalization therapy

The word 'Rasayana' lterally means “the path that rasa takes” (rasa - referring to the primordial tissue - plasma), and ayana - (path). It is considered as the science of the restoration of youth and relief of the suffering and degradation that accompanies aging and bestows longevity. It is believed in ayurveda that the qualities of rasa dhatu influence the health of all the other dhatus of the body; hence, any medicine that enhances the quality of rasa is a a Rasayana. Rasayana tantra, the study and teaching of rejuvenation medicine, has long been a traditionally independent clinical discipline within ayurveda.

Rasayana (rejuvenation or revitalization therapy) one of the historic eight specializations within traditional ayurvedic practice, although this least understood branch of this science, is becoming of ever growing interest.

Until relatively recently, much of the information on India's research into their medicinal plants has remained within India, mainly published within Indian journals. Over the past few decades, however, as interest in the field of ayurveda has expanded globally, and with the integration of herbal. herbomineral and metallic medicines discovered and long used abroad into convention treatments, and along with the strengthening of academic networks internationally, the results of Indian herbal drug research is both becoming available to Western audiences as well as stirring Western inquiries into the properties of these medicines.

Looking at it from Westerrn perspective, a Rasayana medicine is one that may be said to have five properties: viz., its actions as an adaptogen, an immunostimulant, an immunomodulator, a pro-host probiotic and an anti-mutagenic. To which we might add a sixth quality, that of tropism: an attraction toward a particular tissue, organ or organ system.

This volume (one of a series dedicated to and entitled Traditional Herbal Medicines for Modern Times) provides detailed information on fifty-three specific plants (from Aak - Calotropis to Vidhara - Argyreia speciosa) used in various Rasayana preparations and describes their therapeutic benefits for numerous disorders. It also contains on Rasayana formulations. It is a comprehensive reference suitable for anyone involved in medicinal and aromatic plant research.

In light of the extreme importance of Rasayana in ayurvedic therapy it is fitting that Dr. Harsharnjit Puri has authored this excellent reference work with detailed and very clear explanations on the plants, their uses in folklore and tradition as well as in ayurveda, their means of preparation, their therapeutic indications and references to pharmacological studies and references. Altogether this is a very good book on ayurvedic herbal medicine and required reading on the subject of herbs and the promotion of longevity.

General readers will find it to be among the very best books dealing with cosmology, because Singh follows the same plan he used in his brilliant Code Book: he puts people--not equations--first in the story. By linking the progression of the Big Bang theory with the scientists who built it up bit by bit, Singh also uncovers an important truth about how such ideas grow. Death is an essential element in the progress of science, since it takes care of conservative scientists of a previous generation reluctant to let go of an old, fallacious theory and embrace a new and accurate one. As harsh as this statement seems, even Einstein defended an outmoded idea about the universe when an unknown interloper published equations challenging the great man. Einstein didn't have to die for cosmology to move forward (he reluctantly apologized for being wrong), but stories like this one show how difficult it can sometimes be for new theories to take root. Fred Hoyle, who coined the term "big bang" as a way to ridicule the idea of a universe expanding from some tiny origin point, strongly believed that the cosmos was in a steady state. Starred Review. It was cosmologist Fred Hoyle who coined the term "big bang" to describe the notion that the universe exploded out of nothing to kick-start space and time. Ironically, Hoyle himself espoused the steady state theory, positing that the universe is eternal and never really changes. Former BBC producer and science writer Singh (Fermat's Enigma) recounts in his inimitable down-to-earth style how the big bang theory triumphed. Readers will find here one of the best explanations available of how Cepheid stars are used to estimate the distance of other galaxies. Singh highlights some of the lesser-known figures in the development of the big bang theory, like Henrietta Leavitt, a volunteer "computer" at the Harvard College Observatory who in 1912 discovered how Cepheid stars can be used to measure galactic distances. Singh shows how the creation of the heavier elements was a major stumbling block to widespread adoption of the big bang until Hoyle (once again boosting the theory that he so fervently opposed) proved that they were created in stars' nuclear furnaces and strewn throughout the universe via supernova explosions. Readers who don't need a review of the early development of cosmology may wish that Singh had adopted a somewhat less leisurely pace. But his introductory chapters hold a lot of worthwhile material, clearly presented for the science buff and lay reader. There's no better account of the big bang theory than this. When I started teaching college in 1964, the required reading for my general studies science course included two articles by two prominent physicists published in Scientific American eight years previously. George Gamow, a principal architect of the big bang theory, made the case for a universe that began billions of years ago as an explosion from an infinitely dense and infinitely small seed of energy. Fred Hoyle, stalwart champion of the steady state theory, took the stand for an infinite universe with no beginning and no end, in which matter is continuously created in the space between the galaxies. Both theories explained the outward rush of the galaxies discovered by Vesto Slipher, Edwin Hubble and Milton Humason in the first decades of the century. Both theories had strengths and weaknesses. For example, the big bang successfully accounted for the known abundances of hydrogen and helium in the universe but posited an embarrassing beginning that could not be explained. The steady state theory avoided the stumbling block of a universe that seemed to come from nowhere but replaced it with many little unexplained beginnings (those particles of matter appearing continuously from nothing). Yet the big bang theory made one prediction that was testable: if the universe began in a blaze of luminosity, a degraded remnant of that radiation should still permeate the cosmos, and the precise spectral distribution of this microwave-frequency background could be calculated. Meanwhile, entirely independently, two radio astronomers at Bell Labs in New Jersey, Robert Wilson and Arno Penzias, were trying to find the source of an annoying hiss in their microwave antenna that seemed to come equally from all parts of the sky. The hiss turned out to have precisely the characteristics predicted by the big bang cosmologists. For the first time in history, the human mind had constructed a creation story that could be tested empirically. With the discovery of the cosmic microwave background radiation, the big bang delivered a knockout blow to its steady state competitor. It's a wonderful story, and it deserves a master storyteller. Simon Singh--a physicist with established credentials as a science popularizer--is up to the task. His previous books, Fermat's Enigma and The Code Book, became international best-sellers. Singh weaves the many threads of the story skillfully together, beginning with the cosmological speculations of the ancient Greeks and ending with the thorny contemporary question, "What came before the big bang?" His tale begins slowly, but only because we know so little about the personal lives of the early players. Singh really gets up to speed as we enter the 20th century, with its lively cast of strong personalities tussling with the universe and with one another. Two great historical debates lie at the heart of the book. The first concerned whether the spiral nebulae, catalogued throughout the 19th century, are part of our own Milky Way Galaxy, and therefore relatively near, or other "island universes" far away. Resolving this debate meant finding a reliable way to measure the distances to the nebulae. Singh ushers onstage two giants of 20th-century astronomy, Harlow Shapley and Edwin Hubble, who anchored opposite sides of the nebula debate. He also gives star turns to astronomers who deserve to be better known, such as Annie Jump Cannon and Henrietta Leavitt. Telescopes played a leading role in the debate, most notably the 100-inch Hooker Telescope on Mount Wilson and the 200-inch Hale reflector on Mount Palomar, both in California. These instruments enabled astronomers to resolve the nebulae into stars, which provided the necessary distance indicators. The spiral nebulae are indeed other Milky Ways. Once the nebula debate was resolved, Hubble recognized the expansion of the universe, and a second great debate came to the fore: big bang vs. steady state. Big ideas and big egos were at stake. Gamow and Hoyle, in particular, squared off against each other, even in the pages of this magazine. Then came the discovery of the cosmic background radiation in the mid-1960s by the Bell Labs radio astronomers. No sooner had I introduced my students to the most contentious cosmological debate of the 20th century than the universe whispered the resolution. Singh spins out the drama with verve and wit. We meet scientists w ho are shy and retiring and others with a flair for contention, epic discoveries made serendipitously and beautiful theories shot down by intractable facts, a pooch named Kepler and a persistent pigeon that made its home in the Bell Labs telescope. This is a perfect book for anyone who wants to know what science is all about.

Fun read

This book was recommended reading for my Introduction to Cosmology class - it may as well have been about anti-gravity, because once I picked this book up, I just couldn't put it down! Literally read through the whole thing in one shot. Singh does an amazing job of telling over the history of the universe though the progression of scientific discovery, and truly makes it a fun read. Whether you're specifically interested in cosmology, or just want to read some good writing and learn something while you're at it, I highly recommend this book. It even has re-read potential, if you're into that sort of thing. Two thumbs up!

The brief history of a big phrase

This book is not only about the physics behind or under the Big Bang theory but mainly about its ascension from the lower plains of initial and tenuous discussions up to the pinnacle of science. This is basic to understand what are you going to read before deciding to buy the book.

First of all you need to know that Simon Singh also wrote "Fermat's enigma," which is as good and well written as this one. I read both and it is hard for me to say which one is better, but what I did know is that both books are mandatory readings for anyone interested in science and how it explains everything we know for certain.

In this vein, Big Bang is the history of a competition between ideas that followed the Einstein's theory of gravity, ideas brought with the equations or that were implicit in them. What Alexander Friedman, Georges Lemaître and others did, was to make them explicit, to show their implications in terms of an (in some sense unexpected) origin to the universe.

Einstein wasn't convinced from the very beginning and in so doing and furthermore being the prevailing idea of a static universe so strongly rooted in the zeitgeist of the times (1920s), the war was declared among contradictory positions.

Subsequent observations and a vast amount of measurements and discussion made that Big Bang theory began to gain adherents and supporters. This is what Simon Singh tells us in a very funny and highly explanatory style: in fact, every time we need a drawing he puts it, and when (or if) we need a metaphor he gives us a very good one.

He is not a journalist but a physicist who knows how to explain very difficult things. In fact, I gave the book to my wife promising her that she would understand everything about the Big Bang theory. At first she didn't believe me (she is a psychologist so she shouldn't) but after reading the book she gave me five stars for the recommendation, the same stars I give to the work of Mr. Singh.

Amazing book that covers the width of the Universe

Big Bang is in essence a history of astronomy, or more precisely, cosmology, the study of the universe. Obviously, this is quite a large field of study, but one that Simon Singh accomplishes beautifully.

Despite his education, Simon Singh can write, and write well. He can explain difficult, mind-bending concepts and vast measurements of scale better than probably anyone alive. And what do I mean by 'despite his education', for Simon Singh is really Simon Singh, Ph.D., with a degree in particle physics from Cambridge University, the school that gave us such scientists as Sir Isaac Newton, Stephen Hawking, Charles Darwin, James Clerk Maxwell, Rutherford, and Alan Turing. After working at CERN in Switzerland for a while after graduation, he decided to become an author, journalist, and TV producer, with the goal of bringing science to the everyday man (and woman). The problem is, of course, that most scientists cannot write, at least stuff that you and I can understand. Well, Dr. Singh can do that.

The Big Bang traces the history of the theory of the Earth and the universe from the ancient Egyptians calculating, with remarkable accuracy, of the size of the Earth, to experiments requiring sophisticated satellites that must orbit the earth for years, making measurements that are impossible to make from earth, before useful data can be collected from them.

Dr. Singh talks about how astronomers calculate the distance to planets, other stars, and even other galaxies. He talks about telescopes, compasses, and radio telescopes. He talks about gravity, spacetime, and relativity. He talks about measurements being taken that must be accurate to four or more decimal places to be useful.

This really is a superb book, and very well written. I have just read it, but plan on reading it again within a few months, to help cement some of the knowledge into my brain.

Highly recommended.

About the Author
John Kresse retired from coaching in 2002 after a 38-year career that included 560 wins in 23 years as head coach at the College of Charleston. Previously, Kresse assisted National Basketball Hall of Famer Lou Carnesecca during two separate tenures at St. John's University, wrapped around three seasons with the New Your Nets of the American Basketball Association. He also coached briefly at the high school level in his native New York. When Kresse retired from college of Charleston, his .797 career winning percentage was second-best among active NCAA Division I coaches. His teams had won 21 or more games nine straight years and in 18 of his 23 season as coach. Kresse presided over the program's highly successful transition from NAIA to NCAA Division I membership. From 1994 to 1999, Charleston earned four NCAA Tournament and two NIT bids. His 1997 team upset Maryland before losing in the final minute to eventual national champion Arizona in the NCAA Tournament. Charleston gained a reputation as a "giant killer" with voices over such major-college programs as North Carolina (twice), Stanford, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Penn State, Arizona State, Massachusetts, TCU, Charlotte (twice), and Alabama-Birmingham. While in the NAIA ranks, Kresse's teams won six district championships and a national championship during the seven-year period from 1983 through 1989. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2005, and, in 2009, was named to the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame. Kresse currently serves as special assistant to the College of Charleston athletic director. He and his wife, Sue Sommer-Kresse, have two sons, Ryan and John.
Richard Jablonski is a research associate in the Department of Library Science and Informatics at the Medical University of South Carolina, and a freelance television producer and journalist. Previously, he was an award-winning sportswriter and columnist for newspapers in Charleston, SC, and Oneonta, NY, and commentator for local and regional radio and television coverage of College of Charleston basketball. In addition to sports-related topics, Jablonski has authored publications and produced television programs on minority health issues, environmental risk, and public education.

This book...ah!Again, I had expected a lot ONLY to turn up TRULY disappointed by this book and its *LACK* of a strong narrative and a convincing storyline! Numbers,figures,excessive technicalities plague it.. Still given it 2 stars for the cover image and the vision of the author for creating a series of books known by "Numbers"!

Windows XP for Dummies does a good job in its role as the flagship of the Dummies line, providing Windows novices with a guided introduction to Microsoft's latest and most feature-rich operating system for everyday computer users. Its treatment of computer, Windows, and Internet fundamentals is among the best on the market, and author Andy Rathbone has an appealing way of writing that's simultaneously fun and detail-rich. If you're a Windows novice--meaning you don't know how to undelete a file that's been sent to the Recycle Bin, or what a Web browser is, or what it means to "cut and paste" text--you will get a lot out of Rathbone's work.

Some aspects of this book could be better, such as the part of the networking chapter that calls for an Ethernet hub without noting that a switch, though possibly more expensive, would do the job better, without any additional hassle. The networking coverage also does an inadequate job of explaining how to share a cable modem or DSL connection among several computers. This is a serious shortcoming, and we're getting to the point in our evolution as a society of computer users at which we can assume that everyone knows what the "Cancel" button does and would rather read about the newer, more exciting things that Windows XP can do. Even the dummies aren't that dumb anymore.

But that said--and Rathbone does confine a lot of the really elementary stuff to a skinny introductory chapter--this book is a boon to people who aren't familiar with Windows XP or its immediate predecessors (including Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me). It's also great for people who have learned a little about Windows on the job or from their kids, and want to expand on what they know. --David Wall

These days, so many people really don't have the slightest idea of knowing how to sincerely operate a computer. With all the hype over which to choose from, there is always one thing they all have in common, the operating system. Most computers today that are being released, are geared towards the Windows XP operating systems, XP Professional, Home edition, and the widely released Media Center editions. Nevertheless, with all the hype of Windows upcoming operating system the Vista, many are looking to buy a computer just to upgrade to the next level. But, if you can't even place your fingers on the button.

Windows XP For Dummies is a very detailed, and diverse guide which mainly focuses on the Home and Professional editions. The book gives a lot in each simple way to operate each part of the operating system from how to configure the taskbars to either the traditional taskbar menus, or the contemporary, sleek Windows XP menu. The book gives tips on how to use each main part of the operating system from the Windows Media Player 10th edition, to knowing how you can simply copy your media onto a blank disc or DVD recordable disc. The book gives detailed words on how to maintain and use each part of the operating system with todbits for anybody who gets stuck in a rough problem. For example, if you find that the computer freezes up, you can simply hold the power button down for a few seconds, and it will manually shut down. You'll also know how to make the backwards compatabilty from programs from previous versions of Windows like 98 or Millenium editions, for efficency on the XP edition where there would be problems.

All in all, I just wish this edition could've done a better job at focusing on the Media Center editons of Windows XP, and gave a few more charts about each part of the operating system. Nevertheless, the Windows XP for Dummies is a still a great buy for any new computer owner. I really am learning a whole lot with this great book, and if you're into a new computer, this is a must buy for you.

Solve all your XP problems

This isn't the sort of book you just pick up and read. This is the kind of book you grab in an emergency and it helps solve your computer problem. Wonderful as a reference on performing tasks you aren't familiar with. I Consider this book a "necessity". Even though I am somewhat computer savvy, this book still is needed for unusual jobs you might not do on a daily basis. If you have an XP computer, you need this book.

He has extensive experience of over five decades, in construction, design, management and handling national and international contracts of a wide range of structures, including those in high seismic areas. He has worked with Gammon India Ltd, Tata Consulting Engineers as Chief Civil Engineer and Head R&D. He continues to provide consulting services and training in Structural Engineering and Management. He played a key role in the implementation of technical training centres for the entire cement industry in India. Mr. Manohar is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from Indian Concrete Institute. He has authored a book on Tall Chimneys: Design and Construction and published several technical journal papers. He is a member of a national committee appointed by the Reserve Bank of India to develop guidelines for assessment of structural safety of� their existing buildings.

Suhasini Madhekar�holds a�PhD in Structural Engineering, from IIT Bombay. She is presently working as a faculty member in the department of Applied Mechanics, at College of Engineering Pune. She is FIE (India) and life member of ISTE, ISSE,�INDIAN ASTR, IIBE and ICI. Dr. Madhekar has teaching experience of over 24 years at undergraduate and post-graduate level.�She is a recognised PhD guide of Pune University and has published several papers in reputed journals and proceedings. She is the recipient of the COEP Star Award, an Excellence in Teaching Award at College of Engineering Pune. She was awarded the Alumni Distinguished Faculty Fellow fellowship, by Alumni Association of College of Engineering Pune.
