Turtle Trading is legit

If you want to trade futures and you need somewhere to start, this system will lay the groundwork to get you going. There are elements to a system like this you have to figure out on your own (paper trade and back test a lot). Your trading platform should be able to calculate all entries, stops, etc. The issue you will find here is capital. If you dont have a hundred grand or more laying around for trading, you will need to be wise about what you are doing as your risk as a percentage of you account may be much higher than what you read, and you will need to be clever about what contracts you look at (outside the scope of this book). You also have to rethink the add ons if you are using limited capital. The real test is to see if you can follow the rules and do what the system says when you think you are smarter than it. Rest of the book is worth reading, but is just backstory. If you have read any of Covel's other books, they pretty much read the same. Just remember, screwing up a futures trade that you are not properly set up in can wipe you out. Not just your trading account, but everything you own. This is not trading stocks. Make sure you understand the risk of futures trading prior to starting. You can always play around on Nadex for fixed-risk derivatives trading.

A disappointment.

I won't recap the theme since many have done that. The concept of trying to see whether traders are made or born is interesting and challenging. This experiment, as outlined in this book, however, was so arbitrary and unscientific that I feel it proved nothing except that some who hadn't planned to be traders could be trained to follow a trading system.
Although the book is divided in chapters, I found it to be disorganized and a bit incoherent. It seemed as though the author had assembled his research on index cards, organized the cards as best he could and then turned each card into a paragraph with little attempt to smoothly connect them.
Since many others have praised this book, I may be the problem; but I approached it with hope and departed with disappointment.

An Amazing Story

The Complete Turtle Trader is the amazing story of Rich Dinnis and his Turtle experiment. I won't go into too much detail about the story itself, but I would like to mention a few things that were huge takeaways for me personally.
1. Dennis' view on money. Basically Dennis thought of money like points in a video game. This allowed him to make the right decisions with no emotion involved.
2. Being consistent and persistent. Dennis had the self-discipline to follow his trading method no matter what. 8 losing trades in a row? Doesn't matter. Put the 9th trade on.
3. The importance of good risk management. Dinnis' system has a way to measure the amount of risk he should take on each of his trades. A way that would change for each trade based on the amount of capital that is in his account at that particular moment.
I highly recommend this book. And if you are a trend following trader then this is a MUST HAVE for your library. The story alone is worth the price, but by far the two most valuable chapters in this book are The Philosophy and The Rules.
